give thanks...we've got great wines for you!
by Peg Todloski, WSM Wine Merchandiser Each year I sit down and taste lots of wines, looking for the perfect offerings for this Holiday feast to offer to you at the best possible prices. This year the things that came to my mind when making decisions for our featured wines were three things: value, quality and wide-spread appeal. Value is the number one word on people's lips these days; everyone wants to make sure they're getting the best product for their money. Quality is always important, but especially around this time of year, you want to make sure you're serving a wine that matches the food you so carefully purchased and labored over to create this once-a-year feast. Wide-spread appeal is something I thought about because in my own family and circle of friends, I know it's hard to find a wine that everyone will enjoy. I tried to pick wines that have the most appeal to a large group of people, sure to please even the pickiest of guests. (I usually play this role in my family). We've selected wines from three wineries that each have their place at your holiday gathering. So, keep reading to find the right wine for your next feast, get-together, or holiday celebration. Here you'll find wines that range from light, crisp and delicate to hearty, complex, and full bodied. Reserve de la Dame a l'Oiseau Cotes-du-Rhone Rouge This Southern French red is a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah. Good amount of dark berry fruit, nice earthiness, and a long dusty finish. Well-made and complex. Sale $8.99, regularly $12.99 Reserve de la Dame a l'Oiseau Cotes-du-Rhone Blanc This is a lovely Southern French white made up of a blend of 70% Grenache Blanc and 30% Marsanne and Roussanne. Bright zesty citrus flavors with a round, delicate texture. Lean and dry with a clean minerally finish. Great with a variety of cheeses or grilled pork. Sale $8.99, regularly $12.99 La Fortuna Pinot Noir This is a lovely Chilean Pinot Noir for an even better price. Medium weight with pretty cherry fruit and hint of spice and good richness on the finish. Let this beauty breathe for at least a half an hour and it will match well with a variety of flavorful dishes. This lovely red is organic, too! Sale $8.99, regularly $13.99 La Fortuna Sauvignon Blanc This is what good Chilean Sauvignon Blanc is all about. Incredibly fresh, sprightly acidity, lots of fresh lemon flavor and a crisp, minerally-salty finish. Have this with any seafood dish and you'll be happy! This zippy white is organic, too! Sale $8.99, regularly $13.99 Jesus Diaz Vinos de Madrid Tinto I first tried this wine at the winery back in February. Made in an old monastery since 1898, this wine harkens back to the days of old. Pure clean red fruit flavors, a touch of earth and good minerality. This is a lovely, dry Spanish red with no oak-aging, just the pure expression of the fruit. This will match well with poultry and pork dishes. Sale $8.99, regularly $9.99 Jesus Diaz Vinos de Madrid Blanco Made from the Spanish grape Malvar, this tasty white has more body and finesse than most in this price range. Medium bodied with a round, fleshy texture, this white has crisp apple and stone fruit flavors. Nice minerality on the finish makes this white a great match to pork and poultry and heartier seafood dishes. Sale $8.99, regularly $9.99 |

| Turkey Leftovers! | |||
The best way to stretch a dollar this Thanksgiving is to use every bit of that leftover turkey. One year after serving turkey dinner, turkey sandwiches the next day or two, and turning my turkey into gumbo for future meals, I calculated that each serving cost me about 50¢ each. Now that's a deal! We collected a few recipes for you to help stretch your turkey dollars and prepare tasty, healthful, delcious meals for your family. Click here for our Left Over Turkey Ideas! |

| Holiday Farmers' Markets! | |||
Carrboro Farmers' Market's 7th Annual Thanksgiving Market Today! Tuesday, November 24th 3-6 pm - Home pressed demonstration available in the Gazebo! Carrboro Farmers' Market hosts its 7th annual Thanksgiving Market Tuesday, November 24, 2006, 3-6 pm. Over 25 vendors participate in this Market to help customers create a local Thanksgiving meal. For the shopper who wants to use locally produced goods for their holiday celebration, the Thanksgiving Market offers an array of items from cheeses for appetizers, to vegetables for side dishes, to pre-ordered, pastured heritage breed turkeys, to cranberry relish and the pie for dessert. Some of the specific items to expect are: arugula, beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celeriac, celery, collards, fresh herbs, kales, leeks, shiitake mushrooms, mustard greens, salad greens, spinach, sweet potatoes, turnips, turnip greens, winter squashes, pecans, locally-raised meats, eggs, cow's milk cheeses, breads, bread crumbs, pies, cakes, jams, and relishes. While shopping for your Thanksgiving menu, stop by the gazebo as students from Spence's Farm share the art of making apple cider using an antique cider press. Children will be invited to partake in pressing the apples and tasting the cider in a hands-on demonstration in the gazebo. Unlike the apple juice that many of us know from the grocery store, raw apple cider is the unprocessed, unpasteurized, most pure product that comes from apples when they are pressed. Aside from its delicious flavor, raw apple cider is the most nutritious way to drink apples. To assist you in planning your holiday meal, Spence's farm will also provide information on how to make your own homemade apple cider out of your home kitchen. Don't miss out on this fun event!
