Hostess Gifts, Sweet Treats!

I've stayed in North Carolina the past few Christmases, and while friends and family up north claim to miss me, I think they might just miss the Stollen. "We'll always remember that year you stayed with us," one friend's mother wrote. "And that wonderful Stollen—nothing has tasted as good since." Stollen served as a hostess gift as I made my way home, and as breakfast on Christmas morning when I finally reached my parents' house. This year, Stollen will be my stay-at-home-by-the-fireside treat. More

Whether you're visiting friends, having the family come to you, or staying home in solitary bliss, Weaver Street Market can help make your holiday bright.

Partying? Bring along a plate of cookies! Kupferlin, Rugelach, and Linzer cookies are special to our holiday season. Don't miss these delicious handmade treats. Cheese is always a welcome addition to the table. Dress up some Manchego with a dab of Bonnie Maman's Apricot Preserves or pour some sun-dried tomatoes in olive oil over a log of fresh goat cheese. Need help picking out a cheese? Ask the Cheese Wiz behind the counter for suggestions. Our staff can make recommendations for your every party need. An unusual, festive and functional gift would be the gift of a Miche. These very large, round loaves of bread have a deep, rich flavor, serve many, and can be refrigerated or frozen. Tie it up with a bit of red ribbon and you have a very unique hostess gift. Delicious!

Serving a full dinner? You can still order from our holiday menu, through January 1! We'll need to have your order tonight by 9 pm for christmas Eve pickup. Please note that organic turkeys are sold out. Look for holiday menu planners at the bakery counters in our three stores. Turkey, ham, duck, or Cornish game Hen make for a festive meal. A side of squash or beans, ready to heat and serve, can take the stress out of an afternoon of cooking. The deadline for special order for pickup on December 24 is today at 9 pm. Fill the guests with cheesy appetizers, and round out the meal with one of our fabulous pastries. Or keep the kids entertained with do-it-yourself fondue—see the recipe here.

Our stores will be closed on Christmas day, so buy your breakfast items by Thursday! Pickup fresh bagels, or our market-made buttery croissants to impress your guests. Quick Breads! Keep one or two of our delicious, fresh hand-made quick breads around for a hostess gift, breakfast, or afternoon snack. Choose from Ginger, Pumpkin or Banana Walnut. We even have ready-to-go fruit salads in our Grab N Go case. And of course, don't forget the Stollen.

And if you're relaxing in solitude this year, treat yourself to your favorite cheese (mine is the Meadow Creek Dairy Appalachian—hard and mild), a bowl of warm soup, and a small loaf of sourdough bread. Our pastry case is stocked with slices of cake, chocolate mousse cups, and miniature tarts; buy a six-inch pie, and you'll have leftovers for breakfast.

With one snowstorm under our belt, we're well on our way into winter. Keep your days merry and bright, and happy holidays.

Chocolate Fondue and S'mores
For a festive and intriguing dish for your party table why not make a chocolate fondue? It's easy and fun!
Ingredients:
• 6 Tbls of Maple View whipping cream
• 3 Tbls of your favorite local honey (Lee's Bees, or Busy Bee Apiaries)
• 7 oz of Schokinag bittersweet chocolate, chopped up
• Optional: 1 Tbls of kirsch (clear cherry brandy)
• 1/4 tsp almond extract
• things to dunk! Banana chunks, strawberries (Local solar tunnel-grown strawberries available this week! $5.49/1 lb pack), orange slices, pear wedges (on sale this week for $1.29/lb), chopped walnuts or almonds, pretzel sticks, marshmallows. Dunk the fruit in the chocolate and roll in the crushed nuts. Pretzel sticks can be dunked by hand. Adults will enjoy pairing the fondue with Feist Ruby Port (on sale this month) or a festive Martini, see below.
Directions: Bring cream and honey to simmer in heavy medium saucepan. Add chocolate; stir until melted. Remove from heat. Stir in kirsch and extract. Pour fondue into a bowl; place on platter. Surround with fruit. Serve with skewers. I used the wooden skewers from my summer shishkabob.

Gonna be cooped up at home with the kids? Create some holiday magic for them with S'mores made in the fireplace, in your toaster oven or in your regular oven.

Ingredients:
Mi-Del Honey Grahams
Green & Black's Milk Chocolate Bars—on sale this month!
Elyon Marshmallows - these marshmallows are light and fluffy and so delicous!

If you have a fire going, you can roast your marshmallows over the coals, just like you would in the summer, but if you don't have a fireplace you can assemble the bottom half of your s'more; graham, chocolate, marshmallow on top, and place it in your toaster oven on high for just a few seconds until the marshmallows turn brown. Our Training Manager, Windy Willer, makes a whole cookie sheet of them in her oven when she has a bunch of kids to entertain. Careful, yummy gooey melted marshmallows get really HOT!

I made both of these recipes on the same night, so I was able to use my leftover fondue to make chocolate covered graham cracker cookies. I first encountered these cookies at camp. Spread the chocolate fondue on one side of a graham cracker and sprinkle with chopped nuts. Place on waxed paper until the chocolate hardens.

Chocolate Martinis - (contributed by Jaye Kreller of Tony Hall & Associates) - Drizzle a small amount of chocolate syrup around the top interior of the martini glass and allow it to drip down a bit toward the bottom, then however you measure, big or small the ratio doesn't change:

2 parts Vanilla vodka
2 parts Irish cream liqueur
1 part clear cream de cacao
1 tiny splash of sambuca...remember just a hint of Sambuca as it's powerful flavor will take over the drink very easily.
1 or 2 small toasted marshmallows for a garnish, dropped in
If you're serving drinks FOR desert and not WITH desert, I add a scoop of Ben and Jerry's cherry garcia ice cream, 1 part regular vodka and a few ice cubes...throw it all in a blender, serve it in a large martini glass topped with a cherry. If the consistency is right the cherry will sit on top usually till about 1/2 way through the martini.
Enjoy!

Slow Food New Year's Day
Traditional Southern New Year's Day
Friday, January 1, 2010
4-7 pm
Golden Belt, Bldg. 2, 2nd Floor
807 East Main Street, Durham 27701
Admission: $15 Slow Food members, $18 non members adults, free for children younger than 12. BYOB and BYO plate.

Slow Food Triangle is proud to announce our second annual Traditional Southern New Year's Day event to celebrate regional culinary traditions, local farmers, and artisan food producers. This year, the event will raise much-needed funds for a pilot local food project at Durham's E.K. Powe Elementary School.

The event, which will take place from 4-7 pm on Friday, January 1, 2010, on the 2nd floor of Building 2 in Durham's Golden Belt, will feature a traditional southern New Year's Day meal of collards, cornbread, and hoppin' john, as well as fresh, hearth-based loaves, sweet potato pie, and more. Admission to the event is $15 for Slow Food members, $18 for non-members, and free for children 10 and younger. The event is BYOB, and to minimize waste, attendees are asked to bring their own plates as well. Slow Food Triangle and event sponsors will provide the food and some beverages. Tickets are on sale now and we hope to see you there!

Proceeds from the event will fund the development of a pilot program at E.K. Powe designed to offer fresh, healthy, and local food to students who eat in the school's cafeteria. The pilot program is a collaboration between E.K. Powe staff, parents, and Slow Food Triangle volunteers to introduce a 'Good Taste Bar' in the cafeteria 1-2 times per month from February through June 2010. The offerings of the Good Taste Bar will be prepared using fresh, local ingredients and conform to standard federal school nutrition guidelines. Current menu items under consideration include pizzas, tacos, sandwiches, and a salad bar—all prepared with locally grown and sourced ingredients.

We also need volunteers to help set up, serve, and break down the event. If you're interested in volunteering, please email Mark.

SPONSORS: Slow Food Triangle, Golden Belt Arts, Sage & Swift Catering, Anson Mills, The Splinter Group, Scratch Seasonal Artisan Baking, Farmer's Daughter, Wine Authorities, Docusource of NC, Homeland Creamery, and Counter Culture Coffee.

New Art

'Visceral Depths'
new works by Jacques Menache
Now - February 8, 2010

Jacques Menache was born in Paris, France and came to Carrboro in 1969. He finished college at NC Central University in Durham, and graduated with a Master's in Fine Arts from UNC Chapel Hill in 1973. In 1974, after a year as an instructor at UNC, Jacques founded The ArtsCenter in downtown Carrboro and served as the Executive Director until 1988.

A retrospective of Jacques' artwork was first shown at his restaurant, El Chilango, in 2000. A second retrospective was exhibited at Panzanella in 2006.

The title of this show, 'Visceral Depths' comes from Jacques' long time interest in surgery, biology, and electron photo-microscopy. This new work combines various materials and techniques such as acrylic, encaustic, collage, assemblage and drawing.
