Go with Rustic Bread Cheese Toast. This is a staple food at my house. Lightly toast the Rustic, moisten with a dash of olive oil and top with slices of Gruyere (Owner Special this week: Gruyere for $11.99/lb, regularly $15.49/lb) or Cheddar (optional: dust with cracked pepper); then toast under the broiler until melted. Available January 24 - 30 Vegetarian Chili $3.49/ 16 oz - $5.99/ 32 oz WSM bread recommendation: Make croutons out of Multigrain Bread (cube, toss with olive oil, salt and pepper, then sauté or toast under a broiler) and put them on a fresh green salad to round out the chili. |

| Recipe: Crumbly Quorn Casserole | |||
This week Weaver Street Market is featuring our Cream of Mushroom Soup in the Grab 'N Go case. Pick some up and make this delicious casserole!from Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer Ingredients • 1 bag (3 cups) of Quorn Chik'n Tenders, defrosted • 1 cup of creamy soup (like the featured Weaver Street Market Cream of Mushroom) • 5 oz (half of a 10 oz bag) herbed stuffing mix • 1/4 cup butter/margarine • (optional) apple, celery, other veggies (cut in chunks) Put the defrosted Quorn in the bottom of a 9x6 (or similar) casserole, along with any apple or veggies. (Don't use things like potatoes that won't cook fast.) Pour on the soup; mix if necessary to spread it out. Melt the butter in a small saucepan. Turn off heat. Add stuffing mix and mix to coat. Spread the stuffing on the Quorn and press it into place. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degress. This makes 3 servings; it can easily be doubled and made in a 9x13 casserole. Leftovers keep well except the 'crumbs' lose their crispiness. Cooked chicken can be substituted for the Quorn. |

The Painted Fish and other Mayan Feasts, Sonja LillvikJanuary 24, Sunday, 5:00 at CHICLE Sonja Lillvik, an expatriate living on the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico for 25 years, has just published The Painted Fish and other Mayan Feasts, an edible memoir from the back roads and beaches of the Yucatan. She will discuss her journey into another culture and language. Working first as an "illegal immigrant" for a beach resort, she and her partner, Armando Lopez, later built their own eco tourist business, the Cuzan Guest House. All the while local food was a focus. To help learn Spanish and kitchen Mayan, she recorded previously unwritten recipes and her experiences traveling throughout the peninsula. Sonja Lillvik combines the keen spirit of adventure and a curiosity about the world with the generosity of a teacher, the eye of an artist and the savvy of a successful business-woman. Formerly an associate clinical professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University and the University of California Dental School, Sonja began conducting seminars, "How to Start a Small Business" in the San Francisco Bay area. She was featured on a business television channel and gave talks to local organizations. She also pursued her creative interests as a ceramic artist while earning her pilot's license and learning to scuba dive. Her passion for cooking and her interest in other cultures led her to become a gourmet cook, exploring French specialties and incorporating Middle Eastern, Korean, Japanese and Chinese cuisines. Ultimately she integrated these flavors into California fusion food with a fresh flair. Join us to hear her story—one that many of us would like to live, about how one woman ventured deep into a culture in order to learn a second language and found so much more. |
