Help Rebuild Haiti
Weaver Street Market is collecting and contributing funds to help with long-term rebuilding efforts for cooperatives in Haiti. Customers can give any amount at the checkouts to directly support the Cooperative Development Foundation's (CDF) Cooperative Emergency Fund (CEF) or visit their website and donate to the Cooperative Emergency Fund via Google checkout.

The Cooperative Emergency Fund is one of CDF's most important funds. Over the past 20 years, the CEF has given more than $275,000 for cooperative relief efforts in the wake of 10 disasters. Some of these disasters include: Hurricane Katrina, the 2004 Indonesian Tsunami, September 11th, the Kenyan bombings and many others.

100% of monies raised are distributed through organizations familiar with the specific regions afflicted by disaster. Currently CDF is working with two cooperative organizations, NRECA International Foundation and ACDI/VOCA, to orchestrate a long-term rebuilding effort for cooperatives in Haiti.

NRECA International Foundation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, is a charitable organization dedicated to the mission of bringing electricity to the world, one village at a time. Founded in 1963, ACDI/VOCA is an economic development organization that fosters broad-based economic growth, raises living standards and creates vibrant communities. They help communities in need by working in the areas of agribusiness, food security, enterprise development, financial services and community development.

CDF will be working to fund long-term relief efforts, which take time. Working to augment the efforts of two well-regarded cooperative organizations with familiarity and programs in Haiti helps ensure that your money is in fact being used for the right purpose.

January 28: David Russell - reuniting us after several months with the uncommonly gifted David Russell, who last visited us with Marla Vickers, we're pleased to welcome him back.
February 4: Skeedaddle - Durham's own retro-licious hula-centrics, in sextet form with horn section for added Hawaiiolinian craziness.
February 11: Small Ponds with Caitlin Cary - The inimitable Caitlin Cary (Whiskeytown, Tres Chicas, she who needs no introduction) and her writing partner Matt Douglas (songwriter of The Proclivities), bonded together in Small Ponds form. We're excited to have visitors all the way from sunny Wake County.
February 18: The Geezer Brothers and Miss Grace - Our generous "uncle" Bill Whitmore, his collection of Advocate-y buddies and the charming and multi-talented Miss Grace keeping things ship-shape and above board.
February 25: John Claude Bemis - Wielding the nine pound hammer for one night only, our neighbor John Bemis (Random House author and folk tale enthusiast) and pals hammering out a little Carolina folklore for your entertainment.

Organic Lawns Are Just Around the Corner
by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer
Warm days may tease us, but we still have a month or two of winter. But while it's too cold to work in the yard, it's never too early to start thinking organic! If you'd like to replace chemical lawn care with organics this year, or if (like me) you've always avoided lawn care entirely, dreading the toxic products you'd be required to buy, then Garden Web's Organic Lawn Care FAQ might interest you.

The FAQ page includes everything about organic lawn care, from the simple (how to spread compost on your lawn, when is the best time of day to water) to the complicated (how to prepare soil for a new lawn, the low-down on organic 'protein fertilizers') as well as a 'Possible Problem Areas' section at the bottom. Visit the FAQ here and by the time the earth warms up, you'll be ready to go.

And if yard care is not for you, check the 'Green People' website for local environmentally friendly lawn care companies. (I used the zipcode search.)

New Art

'Visceral Depths'
new works by Jacques Menache
Now - February 8, 2010

Jacques Menache was born in Paris, France and came to Carrboro in 1969. He finished college at NC Central University in Durham, and graduated with a Master's in Fine Arts from UNC Chapel Hill in 1973. In 1974, after a year as an instructor at UNC, Jacques founded The ArtsCenter in downtown Carrboro and served as the Executive Director until 1988.

A retrospective of Jacques' artwork was first shown at his restaurant, El Chilango, in 2000. A second retrospective was exhibited at Panzanella in 2006.

The title of this show, 'Visceral Depths' comes from Jacques' long time interest in surgery, biology, and electron photo-microscopy. This new work combines various materials and techniques such as acrylic, encaustic, collage, assemblage and drawing.
