More compost in Orange County!by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer Last week we wrote about Orange County Solid Waste Management's spring sale of outdoor composters for only $50, cash or check, from their administrative office at 1207 Eubanks Road in Chapel Hill, Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The 'Earth Machine'™ is a tidy, glossy black cylindrical unit that stands 3 feet tall and 2.5 feet wide at the base—think giant Darth Vader helmet! This outdoor unit is open to the soil and will hold about 80 gallons. Use it to turn vegetative waste from your yard and fruit and vegetable scraps from your kitchen into rich, crumbly brown humus, the natural fertilizer and soil amendment. If you missed last week's Compost Demo, never fear...a modified demo will take place at Twig, at Village Plaza on Elliot Rd. in Chapel Hill on Thursday, April 8 at 3:30 PM. There will be another composting demonstration at the Town of Chapel Hill's Earth Action Day, April 10 at Southern Community Park on 15-501 near Southern Village. Other Earth Action Day demonstrations include making your own non-toxic cleaners and a 're use' fashion techniques demo from the experts at the Swap-a-rama-rama clothing swap. There will also be a rain barrel sale. For the full schedule and event information, visit the event website here. http://www.ci.chapel-hill.nc.us/index.aspx?page=515. Or, if you're ready to make a worm bin and start composting indoors in your apartment or office, the Scrap Exchange in Durham will be hosting a Worm Bin Make and Take workshop on Wednesday, April 14 at 7:00. Make and Take for only $40, including bin, worms, and all the information you need to start caring for your worms and composting at home. Contact the Scrap Exchange to register at (919) 688-6960 or email events@scrapexchange.org. |
