2010 Sunscreen Season
Sunscreen On Sale

We've had enough sunny days to warrant the start of the 2010 Sunscreen Season. Here's another good reason to buy your summer supply: Alba Botanica sunscreen is on sale in April! If your tube is running low or has expired, take advantage of the discount and get more now.

Here are some more sunscreen tips: proper use of sunscreen makes a difference in its effectiveness. For example, applying it twenty minutes before going outside gives it time to absorb into the skin and begin protecting. Even water resistant sunscreen will wear off throughout the day. And combo sunscreen/insect repellent may not be a good idea for long sun exposures, because insect repellent should not be reapplied and may lower the 'sun protection factor' (SPF) of the sunscreen. Read more sunscreen myths and facts, including information about getting vitamin D from the sun and the sunburn danger of cloudy days, here.

Alba Botanica's sunscreens come with an SPF from the minimum recommended of 15 to 32. (Bypassing the mysterious mathematics of calculating SPF, an SPF 15 provides protection against 93% of UVB rays, while SPF 30 provides 97% protection. But a lower SPF 2 only provides 50% protection.) Look for water resistant, lavender scented, sensitive skin formula with aloe, and varieties for kids, facial, and sports. Sunscreens are on sale for $6.99.

Cleaning House and Free Cupcakes
by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer
Soon the pollen will be gone, and you'll be able to shake out your curtains and open the window sashes wide! Won't it be nice to enjoy spring with cool breezes flowing through the clutter-free rooms and hallways in your house?

If you've still got some clutter, now is the time to remove it! Donate that bag of you-can't-even-remember-what to the thrift store or head out to the Really Really Free Market at the Carrboro Town Commons on May 1. (Learn more here.) Think your stuff is too junky to donate? Then leave it at the salvage shed at a Solid Waste Convenience Center. (Look here for directions and hours; the sites with asterisks have salvage sheds.)

If old paperwork is piling up, celebrate Earth Day with a visit to the Shred-a-Thon! From 10 to 2 on April 22, bring your paper to the University Mall parking lot in Chapel Hill and watch it be shredded and recycled. A second Shred-a-Thon is planned for May 1 in Hillsborough. For more information, visit the Orange County Waste Management website here.

Next week, head to historic downtown Hillsborough on Thursday night for Ladies' Night Out. The free gift (for the first 300 visitors) will be a delicious, clutter-free cupcake made by Weaver Street Market! We sourced the cupcake boxes from a shop with a commitment to protect the environment; after you've eaten, reuse, recycle or compost the box (the plastic window is compostable PLA) and keep your evening waste-free. (Read about the boxes here.)
Clean house, come out for your cupcake, and enjoy a clutter-free spring!
Farmers' Markets
This week at the South Estes Farmers Market:
Every Saturday 8am-noon. Tuesday market coming May 4th 3-6pm!

Music: We welcome back the South Estes Farmers Market Old Time Jam. Come listen or come play.

Bees, worms and seedlings at our Earth Day Market on Saturday April 17th! Join us for a composting workshop at 10 am with Muriel Wiliman of Orange County Solid Waste and John Blythe of Twin Spruce Farms. Fabian Lujan from The Farm Fairy will share information about bees. Plant a Seedling: tomatoes, flowers, herbs and more!

Will and Sam invite you to Crop Mob with Ever Laughter Farm! Sunday April 18th from 1pm to 6pm. Click for directions.

Farmers' Markets are waking up from their long winter nap and so should you!
Time to get out and shop your local Farmers' Market!

April Specials

Spring has sprung, and inspired a few menu changes:

Our seasonal soup has changed to Tuscan White Bean and Tomato Soup - a vegan recipe.
The seasonal Fruit Crisp now features the luscious strawberry-rhubarb combination.

New items on the dinner menu include:
Pork Scaloppini in a Beef-Marsala Reduction Sauce with Dried Figs, over a Creamy Risotto.
And a new vegan pasta dish - Bucatini Puttanesca - with that famously flavorful sauce of sweet tomatoes, kalamata olives, capers, garlic, white wine, and olive oil. This dish is also available in a non-vegan version with sautéed shrimp.

Our new cocktail list for spring offers four refreshing, delicious creations from the bar.
The one named with the Italian word for spring - Primavera - is a soothing celebration of fragrant spring days, made with Absolut citron vodka, Saint Germaine liqueur, lemon juice, simple syrup and a splash of soda.
Strawberry Margarita
Cuervo Gold tequila, strawberry liqueur, triple sec, splash of sour mix, on the rocks.
Pear-tini
Absolut Pear vodka and pineapple juice, straight up in a chilled martini glass.
Limonjito
Limoncello, fresh mint, fresh lime juice and a splash of cranberry juice, on the rocks.
