| Grass-Fed Beef | |||
Celebrate Earth Day by grilling a sustainably grown hamburger. Weaver Street Market carries 100% grass-fed beef. It's better for you, better for the animals and better for the earth.WSM carries only 100% grass-fed beef because we believe the benefits are compelling. Grass-fed beef is good for you: • Leaner than conventional beef, with 30% less fat but just as much flavor. • Lower in cholesterol than grain-fed beef. • Higher in vitamins A & E, as well as conjugated linoleic acid. • More Omega-3 fatty acids. Grass-fed beef is good for cattle: • Grass is the natural diet of ruminants. • Pasture grazing provides a better quality of life than conventional feedlots. • Lack of crowding reduces stress. • Better living conditions make for healthier cows. Grass-fed beef is good for the environment: • Grazing eliminates the need for grain grown using pesticides and chemical fertilizers. And, because grass does not need to be harvested and transported like grain, farmers use less fuel and energy. • Grazing preserves topsoil, while conventional grain farming contributes to erosion. • Naturally fertilized pasture turns the problem of manure into an opportunity. • Pasture helps reduce greenhouse gases by binding carbon in deep root masses. • Pasture removes more carbon dioxide from the air than any other land use, including forestland. Our grass-fed beef comes from local farms. We are committed to offering meat from small-scale local producers and processors. We build partnerships with family farms and processors in North Carolina who share our commitment to quality products and sustainable farming practices. Celebrate Earth Day with Dr. Bronner's: Organic, Fair Trade, and Uniting the Worldby Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer Earth Day is upon us, inspiring positive change and love of the Earth. Want an easy way to "Make every day Earth Day"? Start using Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps. They're biodegradable and vegetable-based, with no synthetic foaming agents, thickeners or preservatives. The simple, ecological formulations are based on "Old World quality and expertise": water, oils (coconut, palm, olive, hemp, jojoba), essential oils (like peppermint, lavender, or rose), citric acid, and vitamin E. Dr. Bronner immigrated from Germany in 1929, bringing his family's soap-making tradition, and started Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps in 1948. He traveled America, selling soaps and preaching his philosophy of "transcendent unity across religious and ethnic divides." When he realized that people were buying his soap but not staying for his lecture, Dr. Bronner began printing his message on the bottles—thus the frantic, tiny text which reads "Absolute cleanliness is godliness! Balanced food for body-mind-soul-spirit is our medicine!" and "Enjoy only 2 cosmetics, enough sleep & Dr. Bronner's 'Magic Soap' to clean body-mind-soul-spirit instantly uniting One! All One!" In the late 1960's, Dr. Bronner's sales exploded. As the timeline on the company website explains, "Young people...come to love the soap with which they could do everything: from washing their VW vans, to cleaning their bell-bottoms, to washing themselves by the nearby lake. They also groove on the label's call to peace and the fact that Dr. Bronner is a real person, not some corporate mascot. Word-of-mouth soon makes Dr. Bronner's the iconic soap of that era." In the decades that followed, the soap spread into every health food store in the U.S. and then into the mainstream, on the way to becoming the number-one-selling natural brand of soap in North America. Since 2003, the soaps have been certified organic. In 2006, the company began switching their major ingredients to fair trade sources, even setting up fair trade projects when needed. But it gets even better: the cylinder bottles and paper labels are 100% Post-Consumer Recycled materials. In the 1990s, the company began a health benefit and profit-sharing plan for all employees. In 2003, it took on an elevated level of social responsibility: family executives implemented a 5 to 1 compensation cap between the top salaries and lowest wages, the health plan was improved to a no-deductible 'Preferred' PPO plan, and all profits not needed for business development or debt retirement were dedicated to progressive causes and charities. Learn more about Dr. Bronner's at their website here. Check out the philosophy lesson on the soap bottle labels here. Read the complete history of the Bronner family and company, from escaping the Nazis to making reggae videos, here. And don't forget to buy soap! Dr. Bronner's liquid Magic Soaps are on sale through April, $3.99 (8 oz bottle) and $9.99 (32 oz bottle). |
