| Salmon on sale! | |||
Delicious and nutritious!Salmon is low in calories and saturated fat, yet high in protein, and contains healthful omega-3 fatty acids. In addition to being an excellent source of omega-3s, salmon is an excellent source of selenium, niacin, vitamin B12, phosphorus, magnesium and vitamin B6. Salmon makes a great summertime grill; drizzle a salmon fillet with olive oil, salt, pepper, layer with thinly sliced red onion and lemons and grill. Pair it with potatoes, yellow squash or zucchini. For a more robust meal, try Panzanella's recipe for Salmon and Asparagus Risotto. |

"Charleston Altered" Photographs by Amy Stern Weaver Street Market in Hillsborough Through June 27 Trained as a professional photographer in New York, Amy Stern began her career as a diehard believer in the medium of 35 mm film. She eventually discovered the facility and beauty of digital photography, and now uses both in her work. The very recent group of digital photographs, on exhibit in the Hillsborough store's café, is a somewhat flamboyant but lucid look at the fascinating city of Charleston, South Carolina. A historically rich city, Charleston's architecture is beautiful in itself, but digitally tweaked and edited, Amy's final images evoke a more vivid and dramatic ambiance. It follows that the collection is titled "Charleston Altered". Born and raised in the south, Amy Stern has lived in Atlanta, Tampa, Chicago, New York, and in 2006 happily settled in North Carolina. She now lives in Carrboro with her family, where her portrait photography business is based. To see more of Amy Stern's photography, visit her website. |

Mosquito Protection the Natural Wayby Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer With the days of pollen passing, it's time to enjoy a pleasant evening outside—reclining on your back deck, sipping lemonade on your front porch, or heading to town to eat out or hear music. But just when you think you're about to enjoy springtime, that whining buzz in your ear tells you it's too late: the mosquitoes have arrived. Unfortunately, it's a myth that mosquitoes avoid people who eat garlic. (Read the article here.) Mosquitoes find their victims by detecting body heat, lactic acid, and carbon dioxide. The one 'food' found to affect mosquito behavior is alcohol, and, sadly, it attracts them. Conventional bug sprays usually contain DEET, a chemical with potential side effects and complicated application instructions such as not applying it to broken skin and washing it off after use. (Read more about DEET here.) If you'd like to enjoy the cool twilight without the constant need to shoo mosquitoes, and you want to avoid DEET, try Quantum Health's Buzz Away bug spray. It's made with bug deterring oils like citronella, cedarwood, eucalyptus, lemongrass, and peppermint, and it's on sale in May at all Weaver Street Market locations! |
