| Grillmaster Chuck! | |||
Chuck Tezekjian Holly Springs, NC by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer There are lots of barbeque sauces out there, but sometimes the simplest is the best. Chuck Tezekjian's original Grillmaster Chuck sauce proves this, winning barbeque competitions from Florida to South Carolina to the heart of barbeque territory, Texas. With the mild flavor of all natural fruit juices, brown sugar, and molasses, it's bottled locally in Louisburg, North Carolina, east of Durham. Just in time for Memorial Day and your first summer cookout, Weaver Street Market is carrying Grillmaster Chuck's Original flavor, as well as spicy Smokin' Chipotle and packs-a-punch South of the Butt. Chuck has always been passionate about cooking, since he stood mesmerized by the grill, watching his dad cook. He ended up a 'computer guy' but never quit cooking; he'd buy barbeque sauces from the store and add ingredients to improve them. Trying new ingredients became a challenge—friends would bring him odd ingredients, challenge him to make a sauce, and then come over to taste the results. People asked for his recipes. He sold batches of barbeque sauce to friends. In 1993, Chuck entered the Backyard Barbeque Competition in Jacksonville, Florida and won first place. The next year, after moving to Holly Springs, North Carolina, Chuck entered a chili cook-off sponsored by a Raleigh radio station. His chili, with his barbeque sauce as a base, won the 'unique' category. Everyone told him he should bottle the sauce. Chuck kept dabbling, and soon had his kitchen inspected and started to sell sauces online. Sales increased, and soon he had to rent a commercial kitchen. Grillmaster Chuck now makes six barbeque sauces along with four rubs. He's had to include a local bottler to keep up with the demand. What began as a hobby has become his life. "I love when people try it and love it," Chuck says of his sauce. "I love when a child's in his stroller, reaching for it, and his mom says, 'He won't like that!' as I give him some, and then a smile breaks across his face and her jaw drops to the ground." Look for Grillmaster Chuck's Original, Smokin' Chipotle, and South of the Butt barbeque sauces at Weaver Street Market. Local, grass-fed ground beef is on sale this week. Grilling with grass-fed beef is easy and it, of course, makes tasty burgers! For the best results add a little of your favorite marinade such as Grillmaster Chuck, along with salt and pepper to taste, and a little dried parsley. Mash the meat and seasonings together and shape into patties. Grill over medium heat just until the juice runs clear. Uncooked patties can be frozen for a quick dinner option later. Yum! |

| Grill Veggie Style! | |||
Vegetarians: Take Back the Grill!by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer Does the smell of charcoal make your tummy rumble? Do you fondly recall the barbeques of childhood—licking Mom's barbeque sauce off your fingers as she tried to nab your hand with a sani-wipe? Do you long for the crispy, smoky flavor of something grilled—as long as it's plant-based? Do you miss the days when a cookout was a no brainer—the days before you became a vegetarian? Faced with images of beefy steaks and blackened chickens, what's a vegetarian to do? Don't worry, your grillability is intact, and the options are endless! What part of grilling do you long to recapture? If it's simply the smell of the charcoal, pick up some veggie burgers and build-a-burger tonight. If it's the barbeque sauce you long for, tempeh will hold a lot of flavor, so pour it on. Load up the kebob skewers with veggies and get ready to grill! Grilled veggies make a great main dish or fabulous side to your grilled veggie burgers or tempeh burgers. Here are some ideas: • make-your-own veggie burgers with buns, optional sliced cheese (we sell sliced varieties at the cheese counter), tomato, lettuce, and condiments. Check out our owner specials this week! • grill veggie dogs and serve with all the trimmings: buns, fancy mustard, baked beans, sauerkraut. • heat extra firm tofu as a vehicle for barbeque sauce, or opt for other foundations like crunchy tempeh or chewy seitan. (If you want the illusion of ribs, try Morningstar Farms frozen Riblets; let them defrost a bit so they'll heat evenly on the grill.) • for classic kebabs, skewer cubes of tofu, cherry tomatoes, wedges of red onion, and sections of multi-colored bell pepper. For a Martha Stewart touch, use stiff branches of rosemary for skewers! • for garden kebabs, skewer whole mushrooms, rounds of zucchini, cauliflower florets, small chunks of potato, snow peas, and anything else from the garden that's wide enough. • for unconventional kebabs, skewer Quorn Chik'n Tenders (defrost ahead), peach wedges, and sections of corn-on-the-cob. Don't forget the charcoal: Weaver Street Market carries all natural charcoal at all locations. Take home a bag for summer cookouts—vegetarians included. Light all natural charcoal with paper. Build a little pile of briquets over some crumpled up paper and light with a match. When the bricks are bright red underneath, add more briquets on top. |

| Cooperative Community Fund |
We've planted a seed and it's growing steadily! Now in its fifth year, the Cooperative Community Fund is a sustainable fund for community donations and is part of a national campaign called, 'Give where you live.' Sponsored by the Twin Pines Cooperative Foundation, the fund serves as a means for co-op members and shoppers to make donations to an endowment that donates to local nonprofit organizations.Twin Pines Cooperative Foundation directly invests the money raised by individual co-ops across the country in socially responsible funds such as credit unions, locally owned community banks that support cooperatives, the Northcountry Cooperative Development Fund, and the National Cooperative Bank. This year the fund generated $1500 in interest for Weaver Street Market to disperse to local groups while leaving the principle to grow next year's community seed! Small Grant Opportunity for Local Nonprofits Local groups working on issues relating to: 1) sustainable agriculture and organic food, 2) hunger and malnutrition, 3) environmental protection, or 4) cooperatives are eligible to apply for a grant from Weaver Street Market's Cooperative Community Fund. Staycation, All I Ever Wanted, Staycation, How Did You Get Away?by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer With summer fast approaching, it's time to plan where to go on Staycation! Of course, you won't be going far; the point of a Staycation is to help the local economy, save gas, and lessen your environmental impact by taking advantage of local parks and facilities. The short drive to a nearby park means more time to enjoy your day instead of sitting in I-40 beach traffic. Relax and sleep in, then head down a back road to one of our local parks. You may be surprised at how many parks our towns and county have to offer. From small neighborhood parks to the ones with fenced dog areas, picnic shelters, and soccer fields, they're all across the county just waiting for your Staycation to begin. You can get facility information (like which parks have bathrooms and how many grills there are) on town and county websites. You'll also find contact and fee information for reserving picnic shelters for large gatherings. And of course, Staycationing means stopping by Weaver Street Market on your way to the park to fill your picnic basket. Planning to grill? Pick up a bag of all natural charcoal and some local, grass-fed beef steaks. Hamburger buns and veggie burgers are an easy option, along with a bag of chips and cookies for dessert. If grilling is too much work, grab sandwiches and salads from our Grab & Go case, or pack a meal off our Hot Bar or Salad Bar. With the park only ten minutes away, you could even buy ice cream and arrive before it melts! Learn about Chapel Hill facilities (including picnic shelters), greenways, and parks here.
