| Snacking at After Hours & Open Mic | |||
Summer is here! Carrboro's annual Thursday night After Hours season begins this week, and the Open Mic event at Weaver Street Market in Hillsborough has moved outside. Don't worry about rushing home from work on Thursdays, changing clothes, packing dinner and hustling back downtown to find parking and a seat; head straight over from work and let us make dinner!Remember that parking for After Hours is available in the Fitch Lumber lot and the nearby municipal parking lots. For those looking for a real meal, there's sushi, the hot bar or salad bar, and the salads, sandwiches, wraps, quiches, dosa rolls, and microwave-able meals in the Grab 'n Go case, not to mention a pastry case full of cupcakes, cookies, bars, and slices of pie just begging to be your dessert. But if the workday leaves you stressed out, appetite-less and unable to make decisions in a crowd, avoid the cafe area and put together a simple meal in the peaceful aisles of the co-op. Here are some suggestions: • Put together your own sandwich (requires a plate and a knife): get a ciabattini, slice it flat down the middle, and fill it with cheese, hummus, slices of avocado, deli meat, and/or tomato. Add a bag of chips. (The big bags of Kettle chips are on sale this month.) • For a more gourmet feel, grab a French baguette and a wedge of brie. Let the brie soften for the first three songs, then start ripping and dipping. • Buy pita chips, bagel chips, or flatbread, and dip them in hummus, pimento cheese, bean dip, guacamole, or another dip from the Grab 'n Go case. (Suzie's flatbreads are on sale in June!) • Make your own fruit plate with a tub of cottage cheese or a yogurt and a container of cut fruit from the Grab 'n Go case: strawberry kiwi, pineapple, melon and grapes... • Don't forget a drink! The cafe has a cooler full of single-serving juices and beers, but if you require more hydration, get a larger bottle from the grocery section. Look for R.W. Knudsen's juices on sale in June, as well as Bionaturae Fruit Nectar. • Dinner is overrated! Find a friend and two spoons and chip in for a pint of ice cream! Julie's, Ciao Bella, and So Delicious are all on sale in June. Summer won't last forever. Don't miss a single Thursday night out. |

| Farm Tour Overview | |||
15th Annual Piedmont Farm Tour Hugely successful!Over 3,000 people made 11,000 farm visits to raise over $25,000! Triangle families and locavores, along with aspiring farmers from across the nation, again showed why the North Carolina Piedmont is ground zero for the local organic food revolution by celebrating the 15th Annual Piedmont Farm Tour. The Piedmont Farm Tour is the largest consumer farm tour in the United States, and is co-sponsored by the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association (CFSA) and Weaver Street Market cooperative grocery. CFSA is the largest and oldest organic farming organization, and Weaver Street Market is the largest cooperative grocer in the Southeast. Tour visitors saw how local organic agriculture has helped North Carolina rural communities transition away from tobacco and benefit from the growing interest in healthy local food. Farms like Capt. J.S. Pope Farm, Walters Unlimited and Cohen Farm gave consumers lessons in how humane animal husbandry practices create healthier, tastier meats and eggs. Places such as Four Leaf Farm, Eco Farm and Ayrshire Farm showcased intensive organic production of fruits and vegetables that cares for people and soils, while producing everything from broccoli to shiitake mushrooms, and leeks to blueberries. The tour is both an educational event and a fundraiser for CFSA, a 31-year old non-profit organization that educates, inspires and organizes farmers and consumers to build a sustainable food system for the Carolinas. Weaver Street Market has been an essential partner in building the Piedmont Farm Tour into a Triangle institution. Consumers can find local sustainable farms anywhere in the Carolinas by searching CFSA's online database here. |

Eco-Friendly Barbequingby Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer In the heat of summer, it's always a relief to grill out, keeping the oven off and the kitchen cool. A few simple actions can keep your cookout environmentally friendly. • Cook with propane, an electric grill, a solar oven, or lump coal. Charcoal briquettes often contain chemical inputs that can leave a residue on food and add to ground-level ozone. (Weaver Street Market carries all natural charcoal.) • Use a chimney to light charcoal instead of lighter fluid. (Chimneys cost less than $20; you can watch a how-to video here.) • Choose local, organic meat and reap a myriad of benefits: it's healthier, chemical and hormone-free, and has a lower carbon footprint, to name a few. (Remember, Weaver Street Market now carries only local, grass-fed beef!) • Choose lean meat and trim the fat to avoid carcinogens that could occur from charcoal smoke and flame-ups. • Set the picnic table with real dishes. If the family china is too dainty for the outdoors, look for heavy, washable 'paper' plates that can last a whole season, paper plates with recycled content, or compostable plates, cups and flatware. (Weaver Street Market now carries World Centric plates and flatware. Read more about the company, who offset 100% of their carbon emissions and planted 175,000 trees in 2009, offer discounts for schools and nonprofits, and donate 25% of profits to grassroots social and environmental organizations, here.) These BBQ tips and a recipe for Lemon & Dill Salmon Kebabs are on page 4 of the June Co-op Advantage Program (CAP) sale flier, available near the door in all Weaver Street Market locations. |
