Cool Cooking
Keep the Kitchen Cool with Sandwiches

It's that time of year: you hurry from your car into your house to escape the heat. The shades are down to keep the sunlight out, and the AC is blasting. But it's time for supper; what should you cook? There's nothing worse than turning on a hot oven in the summertime!

With a little planning, you can leave the oven off. This week, why not make sandwiches? A well-crafted sandwich can make a meal and offer a revelation of flavors. For easier sandwich assembly, start with deli-sliced meats and cheeses, available at the Cheese Department; you can buy just what you need, slices for one or enough to feed a family.

Here are some sandwich suggestions:

The Classic Chicken Sandwich:
Deli-sliced chicken
Green, leafy lettuce
Sprinkled with salt, pepper, and thyme
Spread with mayonnaise
On soft white Weaver Street Market's Wonderful bread.

The Sweet & Salty Cheddar Chutney (this one is simple!):
Deli-sliced cheddar cheese
Local Kerala Curry's Mango Chutney, Hot or Mild (in the international foods section)
On Weaver Street Market's tangy Sourdough bread.

The Cool Turkey/Tofurky Reuben:
Deli-sliced turkey, or tofurky slices (found in the dairy cooler)
Deli-sliced provolone or cheddar cheese
Ripe, local tomato slices
A hunk of pungent sauerkraut
Topped with Thousand Island or Annie's Goddess Dressing (or use ketchup, mayo, and relish)
On Weaver Street Market's Deli Rye.

The Too-Easy-To-Be-True Sandwich:
Creamy 'Mom's Chicken Salad' from the Grab 'N Go case (or use Vegan Chicken Salad or Egg Salad)
Leafy lettuce
Spread on Weaver Street Market's hearty 7-Grain or Half Wheat bread.

Don't forget a bag of potato chips and some pickles. (Woodstock Farms organic pickles are on sale in July for $3.49.) Then relax in your cool kitchen and dig in!

"Layers"
Oil paintings by Cat Moleski
Now - August 16, 2010

Capturing scenes of daily life, Cat Moleski's lush colors, and impressionistic style transform these moments into dream-like vignettes. Images both real and surreal take on new meaning as layer upon layer of paint and color coalesce, contrast, and enliven the scenes. Some figures are true to form, some are distorted but all are representative of the constant conflict between perception and reality.

Cat Moleski has been painting in oils for over twenty years. She received her BFA from Alfred University in upstate New York. She has spent two residencies at the Vermont Studio Center. You may view more of her work at her website.
