Cool Cooking
Try it Raw
by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer

To many, the concept of 'raw foods' elicits visions of giant, inedible zucchinis, tasteless plates of mixed vegetables, and difficult-to-chew mystery plants. I thought this way about raw foods until a friend took me to lunch at an upscale restaurant in New York City, where my salad consisted entirely of julienne raw vegetables with a dash of tangy dressing. "I could make this at home!" I thought, devouring another crisp, succulent bite. Eating raw foods doesn't necessarily mean converting to a 100% raw diet; a crunchy, fresh raw salad can occasionally spice up your meal plans. And if you've never tried raw foods, this hot August may be the time; raw foods go hand in hand with 'cool cooking.'

Read about the history of raw food-ism, supposed health benefits, and controversy (mostly about raw dairy and meat products) here.

We'll leave the recipes to the experts. For a community of raw food-ists, complete with the Raw Food-ist Personal Ads ("Are you raw and single?"), visit 'Living-Foods' website here. The link under 'Yummy Recipes' will take you to the recipe page.

Many raw food recipes involve special kitchen equipment, like the slicer that can turn zucchinis into 'angel hair pasta' or the food processor that turns potatoes (that is, raw potatoes) into 'meatloaf.' Simple kitchen tools and elbow grease can replace some equipment: use a grater to julienne vegetables. For salad recipes that don't require anything too unusual, visit Rhio's Raw Energy website here. The ingredients may include items you've never purchased, like daikon radish, pumpkin seeds, or watercress. If so, take advantage of the hot weather to try something new—go raw!

October Board Election

October is National Co-op Month, making it the perfect time to hold the election for the Weaver Street Market's Board of Directors. One of the benefits of being an WSM owner is participating in governing the store, by voicing your views on ownership issues and electing members to the Board of Directors. You also may serve on the Board yourself.

Any current owner in good standing, who has been an owner in their current class of ownership for at least one year by the date of their application, is eligible to nominate him or herself for election.

Candidate application packets may be picked up at all WSM store locations. These packets include background information, details of the election process, and how to learn more about the Board and its processes. Candidates for elected positions on the Board will acquaint themselves with board governance policies and procedures prior to application. Opportunities for doing this include: reviewing the current Board policy notebook, discussing his/her candidacy with a Board member, and attending a board meeting. Such preparation prior to applying will help a prospective candidate to decide whether serving on the Board is a commitment he/she wishes to make. Candidates must present applications in the established form by the published date; no write-in candidates are allowed.

You are encouraged to participate! Contact the board by email for more information.

Consider nominating yourself, or simply vote for a candidate in October. Exercising your rights as an owner is critical to WSM remaining a successful and vital part of the community.

Application deadline is August 27, 2010, 10 pm

Fans vs. Air Conditioners
by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer

The nighttime temperature has dipped below 70 degrees, giving us the opportunity to throw open windows and fill the house with fresh cool air. Turning on a window fan (facing OUT) and opening other windows only on the far side of the house will create a good breeze. But does using a fan really consume less energy (and therefore cost less) than running the air conditioner? Read more here.

Through August 16th
"Layers"

New Art Coming:
"Port Series"
mixed media acrylic paintings by Jenifer Padilla
August 17 - October 18, 2010
Public Reception: Monday, September 13th, 5:30 - 7:30 pm

Jenifer Padilla paints with a visible fury, and also with calm, with the searching eyes of a lost tourist, and a mystical sense of where she is going. She brings natural and industrial objects, her immediate surroundings and distant places, memories and digital records into the construction of a place that seems both exotic and familiar. The weight and curves of immense fruit, and the flat silhouettes of songbirds reside in a world invaded by the eerie lines and shapes of relentless human activity. Her latest works are inspired by the North Carolina Port of Wilmington and surrounding areas. Of this body of work Padilla says, "I was in awe when I first laid eyes on the vast collection of colorful shapes and structures, fenced in and protected. I was excited to get in and document this industrial landscape."

To see more of Jenifer Padilla's work, please visit her website.
