Cool Cooking
Cool Cooking: Baked Potatoes?!?!
by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer
For our last installment of Cool Cooking, I'd like to explore an extreme Cool Cooking Concept: solar cooking! Of course, the results won't be cool, but your house will be, since all cooking will take place outside.

Solar cooking uses reflective foil to intensify the sun's rays, slowly cooking food placed over the foil. Foods ranging from science-experiment potatoes to Solar Pot Roast and Solar Pinto Beans can be cooked with the sun. Solar cooking is environmentally friendly and cheap, and is being promoted in third world countries where it can greatly benefit residents: it protects their health from the fumes of cook fires, it saves them the time/labor of searching for firewood or the money spent on fuel (which can be used to buy food instead), and it protects limited wood resources. Solar cookers bring freedom in particular to the women who do the cooking; for example, girls can go to school instead of searching for firewood.

Get your kids ready for the school year by having them make Solar Potatoes for dinner: all you'll need is a bowl, aluminum foil, modeling clay, toothpicks, and chunks of potato to cook (or marshmallows, for dessert!) Cooking instructions are here.

If you want to get really into it, you can buy or build an actual solar cooker. While some models cost from $200 to $400, a wide-variety of build-it-yourself plans are available here. (Click on a language link under the cooker that you want to build.) A well-known, simple model is the 'CooKit.' If you don't have time to gather the materials for a CooKit, you can buy a kit for $25 here. Money from your purchase supports the work of Solar Cookers International, a nonprofit that promotes solar cooking around the world.

Share the Love...of Recycling
by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer

In our community, particularly in Chapel Hill, it's nearly time for the annual influx of newcomers. While some of your new neighbors may be avid recyclers, others may come from towns bereft of the recycling opportunities to which we in Orange County are accustomed. Some may not know how or what to recycle, how to get a recycling bin, or where/what the drop-off sites are.

When you introduce yourself, consider asking newcomers if they have a recycling bin. If not, let them know to call the county solid waste department (968.2788) to get one. You might mention that they can recycle cardboard at the curb—particularly all those moving boxes—but remind them of the weekly limit (ten flattened cardboard boxes, each a maximum of 3' x 3'). If they have more, they can take them to a drop-off site or put them out the following week. Styrofoam and airpaks can be brought to local packaging stores for reuse (during working hours only).

If your new neighbors seem excited about recycling, direct them to the county's website where they can learn the full spectrum of recyclables and get directions to drop-off sites.

Or, send them to this page, where they can sign up for county listserves, including the Solid Waste/Recycling List, library lists, the County Commissioners' list, or the new 'Agriculture News' list.

Eco Farm Dinner

Eco Farm Dinner Monday, August 23, 5:30 - 9:00 pm
Featuring a special menu with exciting dishes created with ingredients grown by John & Cindy Soehner.

Right here in Orange County, Cindy and John Soehner's Eco Farm consists of twenty-three acres of forest and farm, where the weeds grow as vigorously as the flowers and the vegetables. Like many of our small local farms growing the organic way, most of the work at Eco Farm is done by hand. Both John and Cindy agree that it takes a lot of hard work to grow without the use of pesticides and other chemicals, but they freely acknowledge that they've gotten a lot of help from the farmers in this area.

The Soehners will grow anything that people want to buy, and they have become known for their arugula, shiitake mushrooms, and pork sausages. Finding fresh goodies from Eco Farm is easy. They sell at all the local markets, Carrboro on Wednesday and Saturday, Fearrington on Tuesday and Southern Village on Thursday.

Join us at Panzanella on the evening of Monday, August 23. We'll feature a list of specials inspired by the late summer harvest of Eco Farm in addition to our regular (slightly abbreviated) dinner menu — all a la carte.

August Specials

August is National Panini Month. Honest, we're not making it up! So, celebrate August with one of our delicious, satisfying panini sandwiches on the Lunch and Sunday Brunch menus.

Fresh Farmers' Market Cocktails on Wednesday evenings (and maybe Thursdays). Starting with fresh fruit, veggies and herbs purchased from the Carrboro Farmers' Market on Wednesday afternoons, we invent a fresh sweet or savory bar special (containing alcohol), served every Wednesday during dinner. If the ingredients all last, we'll offer the same cocktail on Thursdays. We'll be featuring the Farmers' Market Cocktail as long as we can get local produce that inspires a cool, delicious summer beverage. Follow us on Twitter, and we'll send you a Tweet about it!

Late Night Wednesdays in August! Live Music on the Patio from 10 - 11 pm provided by Rob Russell & Friends. Bar stays open until 12 midnight. Our delicious pizzas available after dinner.

Fresh! Fast! $5 Lunch! Includes:
• a cup of soup made fresh daily
• a small Weaver Street house salad
• slice of handcrafted bread from Weaver Street Market's bakery

Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunch and dinner. Three excellent wine choices at an incredible price! $10 bottles of wine!
Famega Vinho Verde - a slightly spritzy, crisp, young white from Portugal
Domaine luc Cabernet Sauvignon - a lovely, refreshing rosé from Languedoc in the south of France
Vallevò Montepulciano d'Abruzzo - a substantial and delicious red wine from Abruzzo, Italy

New Art

"Port Series"
mixed media acrylic paintings by Jenifer Padilla
August 17 - October 18, 2010
Public Reception: Monday, September 13th, 5:30 - 7:30 pm

Jenifer Padilla paints with a visible fury, and also with calm, with the searching eyes of a lost tourist, and a mystical sense of where she is going. She brings natural and industrial objects, her immediate surroundings and distant places, memories and digital records into the construction of a place that seems both exotic and familiar. The weight and curves of immense fruit, and the flat silhouettes of songbirds reside in a world invaded by the eerie lines and shapes of relentless human activity.

Her latest works are inspired by the North Carolina Port of Wilmington and surrounding areas. Of this body of work Padilla says, "I was in awe when I first laid eyes on the vast collection of colorful shapes and structures, fenced in and protected. I was excited to get in and document this industrial landscape."

To see more of Jenifer Padilla's work, please visit her website.
