| WR Chocolatier | |||
Handcrafted, All-natural Decandence!By: Elizabeth Friend, Contributing Writer Teresa Wilkerson, the driving force behind WR Chocolatier, is as she puts it, "a team of one." Her path to what she calls "handcrafted, all-natural decadence" has taken a circuitous route from working in the corporate world of software to the hands-on laboratory of homemade chocolates. Teresa began as an amateur enthusiast, baking for family and friends and reading books on technique. From there she began attending weekend culinary institute workshops, until she met Andrew Shotts, one of the country's premier chocolate artisans and the founder of Garrison Confections. After approaching him for career advice, Teresa spent five months as his intern in Providence, Rhode Island. The internship was an incomparable experience. "They taught me everything. It's great to understand the hows and whys. It's what separates good chocolate from great chocolate." By the fall of 2008, Teresa returned to Raleigh to strike out on her own. Of the past year she says, "It's been a learning experience. I'm learning about the industry, and my chocolates get better every day." With flavors like Espresso Cinnamon and Passion Fruit Caramel, Teresa's chocolates combine classic flavors with a fresh approach. "When you taste my chocolate you know exactly what you're tasting. The flavors are really clean and crisp." Her confections are notable not just for their taste, but also for their distinctive look. For Teresa, appearance is just as crucial as flavor. "You eat with your eyes, so it's important to look appetizing. I use color to show what's inside, to evoke what you're about to bite in to." In each box of sweet goodness, swirls of bright orange, yellow, and crimson top satin-smooth candies in a myriad of shapes—a delight for any chocolate lover and the perfect gift for Valentine's Day. At Weaver Street Market you can choose from the Caramel Sampler featuring Orange, Espresso, Sea Salt and Passion Fruit, or the Valentine's Assortment of truffles, with Champagne, Tiramisu, Cinnamon Espresso, and Habañero Orange. All are freshly handmade using only the finest ingredients, with no preservatives. One taste and you'll see why we're passionate about WR Chocolatier. You will be, too! |

Get medieval this Valentine's day with the legend of Saint Valentine!The history of Valentine's Day is a very loose trail of myths and legends. It is difficult to find an accurate historic account of how it came about and no two stories about that holiday are alike. The roots of this now 'greeting card' holiday seem to have come from Rome in the 3rd century. Here is my VERY loose interpretation of what I can gather about the legend of Saint Valentine. Oh, and by the way, I love a good drama, so forgive me for the theatrical liberties I take with the story. So, here it goes (it also helps if you use your best dramatic voice when reading this story): Back in the year 270, there once was an EVIL Emperor named Claudius the second who was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. 'Claudius the Cruel,' as he was called, decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, so he outlawed marriage for young men—his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine realized the unbelievable injustice of this decree and defied Claudius by continuing to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When he was discovered the emperor immediately ordered Valentine's execution. Legend has it that Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison awaiting his death, Valentine fell in love with a young girl who was said to be the jailer's daughter. She visited him during his confinement and before his death Valentine wrote her a letter which he signed "from your Valentine," an expression that is still used today. It is also believed that the jailer's daughter was blind and Valentine cured her blindness before his death. Although the history of this holiday is pure conjecture, the bottom line is that Valentine was a figure who embodied sympathy, heroism, and most importantly, romance, characteristics that are desirable in anyone's TRUE 'Valentine.' In 496 AD Pope Gelasius declared February 14 as a day to honor Saint Valentine. The romance surrounding the idea of love and marriage being outlawed and then secretly stolen from the government who banned it is totally cool. This is so much more romantic to me than that fluffy pink teddy bear you can get free with every greeting card purchase. So this month when Valentine's Day approaches, whether you have a special person in mind or not, I say do something mysterious and more like the villagers of 3rd century Rome to celebrate this liberator of love and marriage. Whatever you make of this holiday you'll need some wine to help elevate your celebration to something romantic and oh-so-Roman. Since most of us don't have our own casks of wine in the cellar like the villagers of old, you can come on over to Weaver Street Market and we'll help make that lover's holiday a little better with special selections just for you. Masottina Pilli Rosato Frizzante If it's bubbly wine you are after, you should try this little beauty from Italy. It is 100% Pinot Noir with just a slight sparkle, making it fresh and lively, but also smooth and easy on the palate. Perfect accompaniment to fresh fruit, or delicate cheeses. On sale for $12.99, regularly $16.99 Antica Torre Chianti Good Chianti can change the whole way you enjoy your meal. This one will definitely heighten your experience. It is medium to full-bodied with lots of dark, rich black cherry fruit and with subtle hints of leather, tobacco and anise on the finish. You know you like Chianti; take this one home today. On sale for $9.99, regularly $10.99 Paul Dolan Pinot Noir - ORGANIC You might remember this delicious Pinot Noir from our Fall Wine Sale. We sold out of this wine and people were clamoring for more. Well, here it is: the same wonderful balance, elegance and flavor you fell for last year, with a terrific price tag attached, to boot. Enjoy this with roast chicken, pork roast or a simple steak. On sale for $16.99, regularly $24.99 |

A Love Story
By: Elizabeth Friend, Contributing WriterMissed Connections: Location: My Heart. Me: Jaded hipster looking to recapture the simple joys of my youth. You: All-American confection that will satisfy both my gourmet sensibilities and my nostalgic craving for the wholesome flavors of yesteryear. Me: I'm ready to settle down and enjoy an elegant pastry, but I can't help but reminisce about the sugary treats I loved as a kid. I want a dessert that tastes great but won't look out of place with my new IKEA tableware. Are you the one? And here you are: A staple of childhood gets a grown-up twist in a new Valentine's special: the Peanut Butter Cup. A deceptively simple premise—peanut butter and chocolate—has evolved into a multi-layered masterpiece that combines cakey goodness, creamy peanut butter fondant and rich dark chocolate. It's like your favorite candy, but more refined. If you're looking for a sophistication in your dessert, proceed directly to the Tiramisu for Two. Individual tiramisu surrounded by chocolate striped decor, with a layer of sponge cake and mascarpone marsala cream. What could be more worldly? For chocolate purists there's the LOVE Cake, decorative hearts surrounding dark chocolate mousse with a layer of chocolate almond sponge covered with chocolate ganache. If you're in the mood for something exotic, you'll love the sweet tango of the Tropical Mousse Cake, where fruit flavors tangle with satiny mousse in a passionate embrace. This Valentine's Day, you can go out on a limb and try a fabulous new treat, or cozy up with a familiar favorite. Either way, at Weaver Street Market, you'll know your treat comes from a top-notch team of artisanal bakers who toil in the wee hours of the morning to work their alchemical magic, transforming local eggs, milk, flour, and butter into some of the finest confections our area has to offer. Love and happiness may require some compromise, but when it comes to Valentine's treats, there's no reason to settle for anything less than the best. So stop in to Weaver Street Market's Pastry Department and show your love! Linzer Tarts Delicious hazelnut crust filled with raspberry preserves and finished with a lattice top and toasted almonds. $3.59/each Mousse Cups Edible chocolate cups filled with rich chocolate mousse! $3.99/each Mousse Cakes: Love Cake Decorative hearts surrounding dark chocolate mousse with a layer of chocolate almond sponge covered with chocolate ganache. $3.99/each Tiramisu for 2 In dividual tiramisu surrounded by chocolate striped decor, with a layer of sponge cake and mascarpone marsala cream. $3.99/each Peanut Butter Cups - New! Pizza Box Update—Just in time for Super Bowl Cleanup!by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer Corrugated cardboard has long been recycled, but always with the caveat "no pizza boxes!" What if your pizza box is clean? What if it's only a little greasy? Do you have to throw it away? Not anymore. The signs on Orange County cardboard recycling receptacles prohibiting pizza boxes are out of date and slated for replacement or removal this month. The 'no pizza box' message may be ignored, and pizza boxes can be recycled with other corrugated cardboard. The boxes DO need to be free of cheese and other non-cardboard items. (A little grease is okay.) For more information on the County's Recycling Drop-Off sites, visit their website. Pizza box recycling at the curb is optional, but encouraged if the boxes are empty and reasonably clean. For more information on curbside recycling, visit the County's website. |
