Local Honey
Local Honey for Allergy Relief: Start Now!
by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer

Imagine you go to the doctor with a broken arm. You're imagining needles, surgery, and a month in a cast, not to mention the bills. But your doctor says, "Just go to the park and ride the carousel once a day, and it will heal!" What could be better?

That's how I felt when a friend suggested I eat local honey to help with spring pollen allergies. The allergies had started a few years after I moved to North Carolina, and if I didn't take conventional allergy medicine, I ended up with a sinus infection. I started eating a spoonful of honey every morning, and as the March days grew warmer, I often felt a tickle in my nose, but full-blown snotty-nosed, watery-eyed allergy misery never occurred. Now I eat honey in conjunction with using a neti pot at the end of each pollen-filled day, and I have reclaimed springtime! (For information on neti pots, see the October 27, 2009 Beet here.)

No scientific research has been published on the efficacy of local honey in fighting allergies. The theory behind this natural remedy is that local honey contains traces of local pollen—the same pollen that produces allergies. By eating a little local honey each day, you allow your body to build up a tolerance to the allergen. (Note: raw honey should not be given to infants!)

Thankfully, Orange County has its very own honey producer, Busy Bee Apiaries, located on New Hope Church Road midway between Carrboro and Hillsborough. Look for their local wildflower honey near the bulk bins in all three Weaver Street Market locations, for $3.39 a pound! You can bring a container from home (have a cashier weigh it before filling), or buy one at the store. Until the weather warms up, keep your honey in a warm location or it may crystallize.

SEEDS Skill Share
It's time for the 2nd Annual SEEDS Pie Social and Skill Share Auction!
SEEDS is a non-profit community garden in Durham whose goal is to teach people to care for the earth, themselves and each other through a variety of garden-based programs. (To learn more, visit their website.) On April 18th from 2-6 pm, a suggested minimum donation of $10 will get you 4 pie-tasting tickets. You will also be able to bid on the unique talents being auctioned off in the Skill Share Auction.

In preparation for the event, they're looking for people to donate pies and/or their skills to the Skill Share Auction—anything from fire juggling to origami, vermicomposting to fly fishing, pottery to Japanese brush painting. The skill share silent auction puts a spin on a traditional silent auction—instead of bidding on things, attendees bid on 'skill shares'—quality time learning fun and interesting skills from fellow community members. The lessons can be one-time only or several sessions long, for an individual or for a group.

What skills could you share? Whether it's magic lessons or mushroom hunting, you probably have a unique skill you can donate! Email your skill, the type of pie you'd like to donate, or your questions by April 1st to Kavanah Ramsier.

More Toothpaste for Your Money
by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer

Years ago, before I'd moved to Carrboro and discovered Weaver Street Market, my activist, PETA-loving friend Anna gave me a tube of Tom s toothpaste for my birthday. The first time I used it, I cringed at the bland, baking-soda taste. But I didn't want to waste it, so I kept using it. Week's later, on a visit to my parents, I switched back to good old Crest...and the syrupy sweetness made me cringe! Tom's had won me for life.

Soon I discovered that Tom's tubes are made of steel and therefore recyclable. Wanting to rinse out an empty tube, I cut it down the middle and pried it open and discovered a hidden reservoir of toothpaste! Swabbing it out with my brush each night, the tube lasted for several more weeks. (Now I get the swabbing over with, transferring the remaining toothpaste to a small plastic container for easier access.)

How can you make sure small pieces of metal, like pieces of Tom's tubes or the lids of cans and bottles, make it through the recycling system? These small pieces often fall out of the bales, requiring extra handling at the processing plant. Secure them by placing them inside a steel can and crimping it shut to hold them inside. Don't forget to remove the plastic nozzle from the tube; it's easy to pull off with pliers if you crimp the opening first. Remember, other small metal objects like pots, pans, nails, or screws should not go in curbside recycling, but to the scrap metal bin at a Solid Waste Convenience Center.)

In March, Tom's of Maine toothpastes are on sale! $4.49-$4.99 each, there are numerous sizes, and the kids toothpastes are $3.79.

Artist's Reception

'Ciao Roma'
photographs by Geneva Sophia
February 9 - April 11, 2010
Artist Reception: Monday, March 15, 2010, 5:30 - 7:30 pm

'Ciao Roma' is the beginning of a young woman's journey of survival. At 18 years old, Geneva Sophia was coming out of a class at 1:00 in the afternoon, when she was brutally attacked. The resulting head injuries left her with amnesia, short-term memory loss, and other disabilities. Her dreams, memories, and essential parts of her identity were lost in an instant. She now lived in a painful world without familiar touchstones. Her mother gave her a camera to help her remember what she had done each day, and with the hope that Geneva would begin to create new memories. The camera became Geneva Sophia's new destiny.

In this exhibit, we see some of the very first photographs Geneva took with that camera. These beautiful images—compelling even without their story—document the vision and work of a survivor, at the point of beginning a new life.

"Local Farms / Local Art: An Art Exhibit Celebrating the 15th Annual Piedmont Farm Tour.
This spring, Panzanella hosts a juried exhibit to explore what North Carolina artists create when the inspiration is local farming. Selected artists will be part of a 9-week exhibit of work based on NC farms. Farmers, farm families, crops, animals, landscapes, farm buildings and equipment are all possible subjects. This is our third year presenting the Local Farms/Local Art Exhibit.

It will be displayed in Panzanella from April 13th through June 14th, 2010. While the Piedmont Farm Tour involves only farms within the Piedmont, the artwork may represent farm subjects anywhere in North Carolina. Artists must currently reside in North Carolina. If you are interested in submitting artwork, please download a pdf of the 'Call For Artists' form here. Deadline for submissions is March 22.
