By Wendy Hayes, Asst. Produce Manager
If you've been away on vacation recently you may not have noticed
our fabulous locally grown organic tomatoes that are in the house right now. We sure wouldn't want you to miss out on these beauties, so here's your official reminder. This is the only time of year that I eat tomatoes. To me, there is nothing more disappointing than the pale, mealy, cold, flavorless things that restaurants will put on your sandwich most any day of the year. Well, fear not! These babies are the real deal when it comes to flavor,
color, and texture. Read more...

It's Tomato Sandwich Time! (continued)

Ken Dawson, of Maple Spring Gardens, has been growing for us for a couple of years now, and we are proud to offer the following varieties to you. My personal favorite is the Sungold - that cute yellow-orange cherry tomato that might as well be candy if you ask me. It was the first tomato I ever loved (or even liked)! Next we have everyone's favorites, the heirlooms, with their real old-timey flavor that might remind you of your grandparent's tomatoes. (These guys are often funny looking, but don't be put off! Some of the best things to eat look kind of silly). Ken's Romas are also delicious, and would make great salsa or sauce, and his red slicers will outshine most other tomatoes, too. Why not try a special mango/avocado/black bean salsa made with Cherokee Purples?? Or you could try Linda's fav colorful tomato stack... Just don't miss out!! Love, wendy
This week the red slicers will be featured at $1.49/lb, so get ready for some tomato sandwiches, at least.

Meet Local Farmers

Eco Farm: John and Cindy Soehner
Nestled in the trees of Orange County, John and Cindy Soehner are working hard to create a farm out of a tangle of North Carolina woods. Eco Farm consists of twenty-three acres set in a lush pocket where the weeds grow as vigorously as the flowers and the vegetables. Like many of our small, local farmers growing the organic way, they do most of the work by hand. Read more...

Heirloom Tomato Stack
several heirloom tomatoes, assorted sizes and colors
a handful of small Sungold tomatoes
a handful fresh, whole basil leaves
fresh mozzarella, thinly sliced, or goat cheese crumbles

olive oil
salt, pepper
balsamic vinegar

Reduce one cup of balsamic vinegar over low heat until half a cup remains. Slice your assortment of tomatoes (except the SunGolds). Salt and pepper each tomato slice on one side to taste. Additionally, drizzle a little olive oil over each slice. On a plate, layer the tomato slices on top of each other to create a “stack,” varying sizes and color, while layering basil leaves and mozzarella slices between each tomato slice. Continue layering until stack is desired height. Toss the Sun Golds around the plate. Finally, drizzle the reduced balsamic vinegar over your stack and the plate. Serve at room temperature.

WCOM Community Radio

Carrboro and Chapel Hill will soon have a new community radio station: WCOM Community Radio will begin broadcasting in September at 103.5 on the FM dial. In the meantime, you can tune to 103.5 to hear a 20-minute station introduction.
Weaver Street Market did the initial legwork to obtain the FCC license and local permits to launch WCOM. It's part of our Community Co-op Project, which supports new organizations that contribute to a vibrant, sustainable commercial center.
WCOM will be a community asset for years to come. In a time of increasing consolidation of radio stations in the hands of a few media conglomerates, WCOM will be a welcome relief - a station operated by and for our community. It will even have a storefront studio, located across from Weaver Street Market's Carrboro store. Read more...
