Peppers and . . . Turkeys?
News from Peregrine Farm

By Cat Moleski, Features Editor

Alex Hitt is one of our all-time favorite farmers and probably one of the best known in the local community of farmers. He's been a long-time supplier of lettuce, tomatoes, beets and peppers! Right now is the time of year peppers really shine. Through the rest of this month, Alex will have a nice selection of colored bells and spicy hot peppers to keep the warmth and color of summer on your plate. Hot peppers also freeze well and are a great way to get that spicy flavor all winter long. Cut them into usable chunks before bagging them for the freezer. More...

Peppers and . . . Turkeys?  (continued)
For the last three years Alex has been offering free pepper roasting at the Saturday Carrboro Farmers' Market if you buy two pounds or more of any kind of pepper. Roasting caramelizes the sugars and peels the skin off leaving you with a soft pimiento-like strip that can be used in Green Chile Stew (see recipe) or salsa, on sandwiches, in salads or in whatever your imagination inspires. Roasting only takes 5 minutes, so stop by and talk to Alex, finish your shopping, and your peppers are ready to go.

new big idea . . .
A few years back Alex and Betsy made the decision to stop planting a fall crop because the weather was too unpredictable. Instead, they decided to try raising turkeys which has turned out to be quite a suitable fall "crop." Last year they raised thirty turkeys and were so pleased with the results that this year they're planning to raise ninety turkeys. They're raising three varieties: the standard broad breast white turkey; and two heritage breeds - the Bourbon Red and the Slate Blue. Heritage breeds are not commercially bred, meaning they retain their native genetic characteristics that naturally make them hardier and more disease-resistant. More...

Anyone shopping at the Carrboro Farmer's Market should be sure to visit Alex and Betsy Hitt. Their Peregrine Farm booth is a colorful cornucopia of fresh cut flowers and vegetables. Try this Recipe: Alex Hitt's Green Chile Stew
Traditional dish in New Mexico served at any meal ... even breakfast! This hearty stew recipe comes to us courtesy of Alex Hitt, who says it's also delicious made with pinto beans instead of meat. What a great meal for an early-fall evening . . . cooler weather is just around the corner! Shop at Weaver Street Market for your ingredients and be sure to pick up a loaf of delicious WSM bread to go with the warm and hearty stew.

Ingredients

10-20 New Mexican chiles (Anaheims)
(roasted, peeled, stems & seeds removed, chopped)
2 lb. lean pork or chicken breast cut into cubes
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 large onions, chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
2 tomatoes, chopped (optional)
4 cups beef or chicken broth depending on meat

Bringing it all together:

In a large pot or crockpot, brown the meat in the oil, add the onion and garlic and sauté until soft. Place all the rest of the ingredients in the pot and simmer until the meat is very tender (longer for pork, less time for chicken).
Vegan Chicken Salad . . .
. . . It's Back!
The wonderful WSM kitchen folks have found another vendor to supply us with vegan 'chicken' salad. This delicious concoction is made out of soy protein, green soybeans, celery, green onion, soy mayonnaise, walnuts, salt and pepper. It is made by a local producer out of Morrisville (www.delightsoy.com) and is available by the pound or in pre-made sandwiches. Both can be found in the Grab & Go case.
This producer also supplies us with vegan chicken nuggets and patties. These are delicious pan-fried, grilled or featured in a stir-fry. The nugget products can be found in the grocery cooler, along with other meat-free products.

Owners' Week
October is National Co-op Month!
In 1964, Orville Freeman, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, proclaimed a national Co-op Month when all cooperatives can celebrate their contributions to the nation's economy and their local communities. For the following seven years, the government sponsored Co-op Month events until, in 1971, the responsibility for Co-op Month was turned over to cooperative organizations.

Today, the National Cooperative Month Planning Committee directs the observance of Co-op Month with this year's theme, "Cooperatives: Owned by Our Members, Committed to Our Communities." Nationwide, people have formed more than 48,000 co-ops for farming, banking, healthcare, housing, electric and telephone service, grocery retailing, and many other products and services.

Weaver Street Market celebrates being a cooperative every year with our Owners' Week. This year, from October 3-9, we will feature extra specials in the stores, special events and voting for our representatives for the board of directors. Go here for a full list of Owners' Week events.

The Indy Music Awards!
Weaver Street Market and Panzanella are excited about helping with this new event. It's certain to become a terrific annual party in Carrboro! Panzanella will provide food at the event from 6:00 until 10:30. Stop by for some delicious chili (both meat and vegetarian versions), Maple View Farm hamburgers, veggie burgers, corn muffins, foccacia, and chocolate chip cookies........

Here's information about the event from The Independent's dedicated website for music: www.indymusicawards.com : In the past we've named the top bands, musicians, records, etc., through our Best of the Triangle awards. We recognize, however, that we've got a unique local music community here in the Triangle--one that contributes greatly to our community as a whole. For years, the staff at the Independent has considered creating a special event or set of awards to reflect our appreciation for the efforts and talents of local musicians. This year we'll plunge into new waters with the Indy Music Awards, which will recognize the achievements of local musicians in a wide variety of styles. The awards will be presented at a show on October 2, 2004, in Carrboro. Four stages--two at the ArtsCenter, one at Cat's Cradle, and one in the ArtsCenter parking lot--will feature a variety of local rock, jazz, blues, and country acts. Visit the website for information about award nominations, how to submit music, how to volunteer to help and listings for the event.
Familias del Pueblo Road Race
The fourth annual Familias del Pueblo Road Race, an event for the whole family, will be held Saturday, October 2, 2004 at McDougle School in Carrboro, NC. This year all proceeds will go to El Centro Latino, a not-for-profit organization, located in Carrboro, committed to improving the quality of life for Latinos in and around Orange County, North Carolina. They provide direct social and educational services, community building and advocacy opportunities. They accomplish this through dedicated staff, volunteers, members, and allied organizations.

The Road Race will include a 10K (6.2 miles), beginning at 8 am, and a 1 mile walk/run, beginning at 8:15 am. A children's race, called Yo Corro (I Run), will begin at 9 am. Awards will be presented to the top 3 overall finishers in the men and women division, and the top 3 Masters finishers in the men and women division. Cash prizes will also be offered to top finishers in open and masters divisions.

This year we'll have the pleasure to add a Soccer Tournament! The event committee is planning an eight team, 7-to-a-side tournament. The teams will be co-ed and will be limited to players 16 years and older. This is a great chance for neighborhood teams to gather for a fun afternoon. For information on entering a team, call Christian Ramos at 923-5338 or Bill Harrison at 942-8177. We will also offer a "casual for the first year!" volleyball tournament for women. Please call Amber Hall at El Centro Latino, 932-HOLA (4652) for more information. The soccer and volleyball will begin at approximately 11:00am. All events will be at McDougle School.

All participants in all sports and all volunteers will receive a 4-color T-shirt with the Familias del Pueblo logo printed boldly on the front, while supplies last. Volunteers are needed to help with pre-promotions, the awards ceremony, and race set up and monitoring. Volunteers can sign up online or contact Amber Hall, Programs & Volunteer Coordinator for El Centro Latino at 919-932-HOLA (4652) Runners should register online.
