The Holiday Berry: Cranberry
Thanksgiving wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without cranberries. Native Americans used cranberries for food, medicine and dyes long before the Pilgrims landed here and Abraham Lincoln declared the first Thanksgiving. Nevertheless, they have become inextricably bound to our Thanksgiving feast. Most likely because they are native to North America and are ripe from October to December. They would have been a great late fall treat and a good source of vitamin C when summer fruits were long gone.   More...

The Holiday Berry: Cranberry (continued)
Cranberries grow in watery bogs formed long ago by glaciers. The early settlers flooded the fields and scooped the floating cranberries by hand. This labor intensive process limited the amount of cranberries that could be harvested until the mid-nineteenth century when a mechanical scoop was invented. The cranberry business took off! Now cranberries are grown on thousand of acres across the North East and are still a favorite at Thanksgiving.

In addition to stocking fresh cranberries in our produce department for you to make your very own special cranberry recipe, the Weaver Street Market kitchen makes three wonderful, seasonal cranberry specialties: Cranberry Butter, Cranberry Relish with walnuts, and Jalapeno Cranberry Sauce. Look for these items in the Specialty case. And don’t forget to try the recipe below: Christy's Cranberry Cookies with Orange Icing!

Bubble Therapy
By Jenni Butler, Wellness
It’ that time of year when the wind howls, days shorten, and the holiday stress becomes too much! I can’t think of anything better to cheer up the winter blues than a nice long soak in a bubble bath with a full glass of sparkling wine in hand. Weaver Street Market is offers some tasty sparkling wines in Carrboro and Southern Village. Why not pair them up with a natural cruelty-free bubble bath to take off the edge?

The Crémant de Loire, Yves Lambert is a dry wine filled with soft bubbles and has subtle raspberry and strawberry flavors. A magnificent bubbly match is Nutribiotic Bubble Bath. This foaming bath has the sweet scent of fresh berries and contains grapefruit seed extract to promote healthy skin tissue.

The Roederer Estate, Anderson Valley Brut, is almost a true champagne that is bone dry with toasty mineral notes. This wine’ s perfect pair is Burt’ s Bees Baby Bee Buttermilk Bath Soak. This locally made bath comes in an adorable pint sized milk container and has a sweet apricot smell. It is extremely moisturizing and clean enough to eat.

Ca’De’Medici, Lambrusco Oblio is a sparkling sweet red wine with fresh berry flavors, which give it a hint of tartness. Enjoy this wine with a bath of ecstasy, Kiss My Face’s Romance Bath. It is free of chemicals and synthetic fragrances, but full of herbal aphrodisiacs.

Finally, try Piemonte Moscato for its delicate orange flavor and low alcohol content. An aromatherapy foam bath, like Aura Cacia’s Tangerine and Grapefruit, will add luxurious harmony. The 2.5 ounce envelope is great for one time uses and the 100% pure essential oils and gentle coconut cleansers leave the skin soft and supple.

So awaken the spirit and quiet the mind with some lip-smacking sparkling wines and a blissful bubbly bath.
Recipe: Christy’s Cranberry Cookies with Orange Icing
Cookies:
3/4 c sugar
1/2 c brown sugar
1/2 c margarine
1/2 c sour cream or yogurt
1 t vanilla
2 eggs
2 1/4 c flour
1/2 t baking soda
1/2 t baking powder
1 c cranberries
1/2 c walnuts

Cream together the margarine and sugars. Add sour cream or yogurt, vanilla and eggs. In a separate bowl, blend flour, baking soda and baking powder then add to wet mixture and mix well. Coarsely chop walnuts and cranberries and fold into dough. Spoon onto greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 11-13 min or until golden brown. Let cookies cool completely before frosting.

Frosting:
2 c powdered sugar
2 T margarine (melted)

1 t orange peel
2-3 T orange juice

Blend all ingredients holding back some of the orange juice. Add juice slowly to achieved desired consistency. My favorite secret trick is to put the bowl that I’m blending the frosting in on the still-warm stovetop, this way you can get the frosting really smooth and spread it easily on the cookies while it’s warm, then it hardens as it cools.

(I’ve had great success making these cookies vegan by substituting soy yogurt and egg replacer. This way you can eat the dough and wash it down with a quart of Silk Nog, yumm!)

Order Your Turkey!
Weaver Street Market is pleased to offer two great choices of turkeys for our customers this year. Both types are grown especially for Weaver Street Market in Chatham County at Hickory Mountain Farms. They are fresh, all-natural, free-roaming turkeys. The Old-Fashioned Bronze turkey is the turkey your grandparents grew up with; it has a little fuller flavor than the traditional turkey and has slightly less white meat. There are limited quantities of the Bronze, so reserve early! The Traditional White Turkey is also available for your holiday meal. The Bronze is available in two sizes (16-20 lbs. and 20-24 lbs.) and the White is available in three sizes (10-14 lbs., 16-20 lbs., and 20-24 lbs.). In addition to a fresh turkey, both types can be Special-Ordered as Roasted or Ready-to-Roast. (Special Orders must be made by Special Order Form, available online or in the deli.) Whichever turkey you choose, you’re getting a good turkey, raised with care by knowledgeable folks who live nearby.

To guarantee a bird of the type and size desired, turkeys must be reserved in advance by filling out an order form or by stopping by or calling either store (Carrboro store - 929-0010 or the Southern Village store - 929-2009). Pick-up will be available at either store location beginning Monday, November 22. Both stores will be open until 9 pm on Wednesday, November 24 and will be closed on Thanksgiving Day.

This great opportunity is provided by Curtis Buchanan, who operates Glen Ayre Tree Farm in Mitchell County, NC, the first certified organic Christmas tree farm in the US.

Last year as you may recall, Curtis Buchanan hauled his organic Fraser firs all the way from Mitchell County to the Old Norina building to provide Carrboro with the first ever North Carolina grown ORGANIC Fraser Fir Christmas trees. Those of you who were lucky enough to get one know just how beautiful they were and how great it is to have a homegrown, organic tree. We published Curtis’ story of growing up on a Christmas tree farm and the benefits of tree production to our economy and ecology here in North Carolina in our newsletter at that time. You can read his story here.

Curtis will deliver on Sunday, the 28th from 1pm to 5 pm to the corner building. Call Curtis at 423.753.5160 to order your organic Fraser fir for Christmas.
