| These Cute Little Orange Things They're sweet, they're seedless, they're easy to peel, they're loved by folks of all ages, they've lots of vitamin C, AND they're cute. Can you guess the fruit??? I'm talkin' CLEMENTINES, baby, and we've got 'em in the house now. It happens every year, as soon as the first leaf falls from the first tree, and the temperature drops to 79 degreees, people start asking, "Where are the clementines?" So I just give them an apple, and tell them they have to hang on a little longer. The apples are good, so that works for a little while, but it all starts up again around Thanksgiving. And now they're here - HOORAY!!! Read more... |

| Recipe: Rugelach | |
Dough1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese 1 cup unsalted butter 1/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 2 cups (sift into the cup and level off) all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt Soften the cream cheese and butter. In a mixing bowl, cream the cream cheese and butter until blended. Beat in the sugar and vanilla extract. On low speed, beat in the flour and salt. Scrape the dough onto a piece of parchment and flatten it out before chilling. Divide the dough into 4 portions. Refrigerate for 2 hours or overnight. Filling 1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons granulated sugar 1/4 cup (firmly packed) light brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 3/4 cup golden raisins 1 cup finely chopped walnuts 1/2 cup apricot preserves (well stirred) In a medium bowl, combine the sugars, cinnamon, raisins, and walnuts and stir with a spatula or fork until well mixed. Putting it all together Remove the dough from the refrigerator and allow it to sit on the counter for about 15 minutes or until it is malleable enough to roll. Using a floured rolling pin, on a lightly floured board, roll out each dough portion, one at a time, into a 9-inch circle to a 1/8-inch thickness, rotating the dough often to be sure that it isn't sticking. Using the back of a tablespoon, spread the dough evenly with 2 tablespoons of the apricot preserves. Sprinkle about 1/2 cup of the raisin-walnut filling over the preserves. Press the filling firmly and evenly over the dough. Using a sharp knife, cut the dough circle into 12 triangles or pieces of "pie." Use a thin knife, if necessary, to loosen the triangles from the board. Starting at the wide end, roll up the triangle and bend the ends around to form a slight crescent shape. Place the rugelach, point underneath, about 1 1/2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets. Refrigerate, covered with plastic wrap, for at least 30 minutes or until firm. Rugelach can also be frozen at this point. Clean the work surface of excess filling before rolling each batch. For the topping, brush the rugelach with egg wash and sprinkle with turbinado sugar. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until lightly browned at 325 degrees. Make 4 dozen 2 1/2 inch cookies. | |

| Great Gifts: Hats, Gloves, Scarves, Stuffed Monkeys, Baskets . . . | |
If you are like me and hate the over-indulgence of cookie cutter gifts for the holidays, swing by the Wellness Department for some unique fair-trade gifts that give back to the community. We have a large variety of wooden toys, recycled wrapping paper, amazing books, locally made candles, new-age CD’s, and locally-made felt scarves and hats from Nifty Noggins.
We are offering some soft and fuzzy hats, socks, and gloves made from 100% alpaca wool. Women with years of experience weaving alpaca make this hand-spun winter wear in The Andes of South America. They are given a fair price for their weavings and work in a clean, safe, and spacious cooperative. They also respect and love their alpacas!! “Eco-lumbia” has provided us with some adorable plush stuffed monkeys. These cuties support environmental and social causes in Columbia, and use renewable materials that are safe and fairly traded. If you have walked through the department the last few months you must have noticed the colorful woven baskets from Kenya. These baskets are perfect for organic produce or a stroll through the farmer’s market. The Siguli Orphans Center is a grass-roots endeavor to assist children left behind by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The proceeds go directly back to the orphanage to provide education, nutrition, and shelter. So as you’re picking up your Emergen-C and Echinacea, check out our display of great gift ideas from all over the world and right here in our neck of the woods. |

| Seasonal Beer Specials | |
We are pleased to offer several seasonal specials in the Beer Department: Anchor Steam Christmas Ale, Highland Cold Mountain, and Wild Goose's Snow Goose Winter Ale.From Anchor Steam: The brewers of Anchor Steam® Beer are proud to announce the release of our thirtieth annual Christmas Ale. Every year since 1975, the brewers at Anchor have brewed a distinctive and unique Christmas Ale, which is available from early November to mid-January. The Ale's recipe is different every year - as is the tree on the label - but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. In ancient times trees symbolized the winter solstice, when the earth with its season appears born anew. Weaver Street Market will offer this delicious brew in 6-packs and in 1.5 liter bottles - perfect for gift giving! The Highland Brewery's Cold Mountain is available in 1 liter bottles and the Wild Goose Snow Goose Winter Ale is available in six-packs. All of these brews are available in limited quantities at the Carrboro store only! |

| Why Shop Local? |
How many shopping days are left? As the pressure mounts to fill your list of Christmas wishes, take a moment to stop and think about the impact of the money you will spend this Holiday season. Through your spending you have the power to affect many lives. When you choose to buy from a locally-owned business, your money works for you and your community. Locally-owned businesses support other smaller businesses such as accountants, architects, computer techs, lawyers and designers. They can offer a wider selection of independently-made items or goods made by small local producers. Chain stores frequently import building designs, graphics and advertising from other locations. Payroll, taxes, and other administrative tasks are shipped out to a headquarters far away. Not to mention the pure profit dollars that simply flow out of your community, leaving behind an absentee-owned business that does not care how their actions impact your area. A locally-owned business is more likely to stay during up times and down, and to work with the needs of the community. Large chains can hold a town hostage by threatening to leave if not given what they want by officials. Unique items offered by specialty shops add to the flavor and distinction of a town’s character. Independent businesses can afford to choose products that appeal to their locale. They are often the only outlets for those special, locally- made, or hard-to-find items that can range from soaps and candles to radical books and music. So this Christmas, and the rest of the year, resist the urge to spend your dollars at the large out-of-town chain stores. Support the local guy, your neighbor, and preserve the individuality and economic health of your town. |
