Salutations! One of your late summer favorites just arrived in the store today; I've been waiting since last season, and I know some of you have, too. It's FIG time, and that means it's time to get creative in the kitchen. Or get simple, cause sometimes that showcases an item best. My favorite simple way to eat them is with local goat cheese and a WSM French baguette. You could drizzle a little olive oil on that if you want to get a little fancier, and toss it in the oven--bruschetta! Another great (yet crazy-soundin') combo is fresh figs and caramelized onions! Don't let this one get away! You could make a pizza with a caramelized onion-based sauce, then top with figs and goat cheese, or you could just get the yummy can of sauce and put the onions, figs, and cheese on top. I bet they'd even be good in a salad with a honey-balsamic vinaigrette...of course, you can just lounge around with your beverage of choice and eat them out of hand, or better yet, have someone feed them to you. (You may have to do the same for them, so make sure you get enough).

A note on availability: we do not order the figs, they just magically appear when they are ripe to perfection, pounds at a time, whenever the gentlemen decide to bring them. The weather affects them greatly, so be sure to enjoy this truly local, decadent, sensual treat while you can.

Figgy Peach Packets
By Anne Everitt, cooking instructor and pastry chef. Anne specializes in at-your-home dinner party cooking classes featuring menus in a variety of cuisines including Italian, Asian, vegetarian, or whatever you like. She will arrive at your house with all the ingredients and you and your friends will prepare the meal and sit down and enjoy it together. The cost is around $40-45 per person. Anne also creates decadent desserts for weddings and other special occasions. Call 967-1513.

Figgy Peach Packets with Port and Pistachios

Serves 6
1/2 pint of figs, tips removed and chopped into raisin sized pieces
1 large peach, peeled and cut into 1/2" chunks
1 cup of port
2 Tablespoons + 1/2 cut Butter, melted
4 Tablespoons Turbinado or light brown sugar
Pistachios, toasted and finely chopped
Thawed Phyllo dough

Preheat the oven to 350. In a small bowl toss the figs and peaches with 1/4 cup of port and 2 Tablespoons butter. Spread out on a parchment-lined baking sheet and roast in the oven until tender, about 15-20 minutes. If the figs start to get dried before the peaches are done, remove them and continue until the peaches are just tender. Set aside to cool.

Have out your melted butter, pistachios, and phyllo (covered in kitchen towels). When fruit is cool, slice a two inch wide strip down the short side of the phyllo. You will have a stack of phyllo that is 2 inches by 12 inches long. Pull out one piece and brush lightly with the melted butter. Sprinkle lightly with the pistachios then top with a second strip of phyllo. Brush again with butter. Then, at the top left corner, place two pieces of fig and two peach pieces. Take that corner and fold it over so that the short top side is lying along the right hand side. This is like folding up a paper football, if you ever did that in school. Then fold over the top right corner and bring it straight down along the right hand side, continue folding, encasing the filling until you get to an inch of the bottom. Then brush more butter on the filled packet so when you finish the roll the bottom will stick and seal. Place finished packet on a lined baking sheet and cover with plastic to keep from drying out.

Begin again with next packet until you have used all the fruit. You should have about 12 packets. Put the remaining port and 2 tablespoons sugar in a small saucepan over medium high heat. Cook until bubbling and reduce to 1/3 cup.

Bake phyllo packets in a 375-degree oven for 12-15 minutes until golden brown and a bit puffed. Place a couple of spoonfuls of the reduced port on a plate and top with two warm Figgy Peach Packets. You can also serve with a scoop of vanilla or pistachio ice cream. Garnish with chopped pistachios.

The winery and tasting room for Stony Knoll Vineyards perches on a small hill overlooking a valley that has been farmed continuously by the Coe family for 100 years. If you walk down into the valley near the pond, you can see across the way an old log cabin that was part of the original homestead. The Vineyard and Winery are owned and operated by Van and Kathy Coe who, like a handful of North Carolina farmers, have transitioned from tobacco to grapes. They're learning as they go about the business of wine making, but they're learning fast and coming on strong.

Their vineyard is young, with vines only about three or four years old. The older a vine is the better quality of wine that results. Even with young vines, the Coe's have been able to produce excellent quality wines and their future stock is already great tasting. I went to visit Stony Knoll with our wine buyer, Peg Conway, on one of her tasting excursions and Van Coe was gracious enough to let us taste next year's cabernet. He led down into the large cold storage room where the barrels of wine were fermenting. Uncorking one barrel, he drew out a small amount of wine with what looked like a turkey baster. This is what winemakers do all year round while a wine is fermenting: they taste it to gage its progress. Because the wine we tasted was still fermenting, it had a lot of sediment in it and it still had a rawness to it, but oh, the promise of things to come was extraordinary. I had never tasted a fermenting wine, so I was surprised at how much of the quality of the final product was already present in the raw form. This batch of wine is scheduled to be bottled in February, so look for great things to come from this vineyard.

Above the barrel cold storage, the Coe family has built a beautiful tasting room large enough for special event occasions. The long sloping lawn is a great spot for a picnic and we did just that. We had Giacomo's Italian salami on Weaver Street Market bread and shared a bottle of Stony Knoll Vineyard Chardonnay. I plan on returning early next year to spend more time in the Yadkin valley area and grab some of that newly bottled cabernet.

After Hours this Thursday from 6-8 pm
After Hours has grown to be one of the "best of the best" nights in Carrboro. It's old-fashioned fun with free music by local bands and the chance to relax on a blanket and picnic with your family on fresh grilled food by local charities. Kids of all ages can dance the night away or catch-up with friends.

Weaver Street Market loves to see people enjoying our lawn and connecting with their community. To keep this event a safe and fun place, we ask that you only bring friendly, well-behaved dogs on leashes and please clean up after them. We want the children who attend our event to have a safe and happy time too, so we ask that they not be allowed to climb the trees or the Crepe Myrtles. We know how much fun it is to sit on the lawn and drink some beers, but unfortunately North Carolina law forbids Weaver Street Market from selling six packs for consumption outside. You can buy beer by the glass outside at the tasting table, singles, or half-gallon Growlers from Carolina Brewery, but please—be kind to our cashiers and don't buy a six pack to take outside.

Orange County Housing and Land Trust cooking at After Hours this Week

The Land Trust is a nonprofit developer of affordable homes for people who live or work in Orange County and earn less than 80% of the area's median income. For a family of four, this means an income of $57,050 or less a year. Government subsidies enable the Land Trust to sell homes far below market prices, and a 99-year ground lease ensures that the homes remain affordable to future generations of low-and moderate-income buyers. Alvaro de la Iglesia, aka Al, has been involved in athletics and martial arts for 17 years. The last 10 years he has dedicated to Hatha Yoga and Tai Chi Chuan. His study of yoga included an internship in the TriYoga Teachers Training Program under the instruction of Joy Anandi. Teaching was a natural progression for him, and helping people to improve their health is very rewarding for him. Al currently also teaches at the Duke University Faculty Club.

ArtWalk: Local Artists

What better way to spend a southern summer evening than strolling around town enjoying free art, music and food? Especially when there are so many local artists' work on display! Fourteen galleries and shops, most of them an easy walk from Weaver Street Market in downtown Carrboro, will be open late for this month's 2nd Friday ArtWalk from 6-9pm. And, you can top off the night with a stop at Panzanella after the ArtWalk from 9-11pm for food, drinks and new work by our own Erik Niemi.

Call for Candidates for Weaver Street Market's Board of Directors
Board elections, as always, take place in October, but now's the time to start thinking if you're interested in running for a consumer-owner seat on Weaver Street Market's Board of Directors. One of the benefits of being a WSM owner is participating in governing the store, by voicing your views on ownership issues and electing members to the Board of Directors. You also may serve on the Board yourself.

Any owner in good standing for one year is eligible to be a Board member, and is encouraged to consider nominating him/herself or another owner.

Candidate application packets may be picked up at the customer service desk in the Carrboro store or from a manager at Southern Village. These packets include background information, details of the election process, and how to learn more about the Board and its processes. Candidates for elected positions on the Board will acquaint themselves with board governance policies and procedures prior to application by at least one of the following actions: reviewing the current Board policy notebook, discussing his/her candidacy with a Board member, attending a WSM Policy Governance training, or attending a board meeting. Such preparation prior to applying will help a prospective candidate to decide whether serving on the Board is a commitment he/she wishes to make. Candidates are expected to present applications in the established form by the published date; no write-in candidates are allowed.

You are encouraged to participate! Consider nominating yourself, or simply vote for a candidate in October. Exercising your rights as an owner is critical to WSM remaining a successful and vital part of the community.

2nd Friday ArtWalk After Party
Friday August 12 Art Walk and ArtWalk After Party - The next 2nd Friday ArtWalk will be The Hot Spot to be for art, taking place in Carrboro and Chapel Hill on Friday evening from 6:00 - 9:00 pm. Many of the galleries will have live music and other art related entertainment. Admission is free in all cases. Refreshments are served at each location. Then join us for the After Art Walk Party from 9:00-11:00 pm at Panzanella Restarurant in Carrboro for food, drinks, and fun.

New artwork in Panzanella - now through September 18, you can see the work of our own Erik Neimi. Erik received his MFA in Mixed Media from Carolina. He currently holds the position of Assistant Professor of Art at St. Augustine's College in addition to working a few nights a week at Panzanella.

The Best of North Carolina Wines

Peg Conway, our Wine Coordinator will be presenting eight North Carolina wines from eight different NC wineries. Peg recently spent three days visiting fifteen North Carolina Wineries. What she found was a state with a thriving wine industry, great people and beautiful vineyards. She's excited to share her experiences with you, through a slide show and tasting tour of some of the best wines North Carolina has to offer. Wineries that will be represented are Westbend, RagApple Lassie, Raylen, Buck Shoals, Stony Knoll, Silkhope and Dennis. Join us for this exciting dinner, and enjoy plenty of food from the Panzanella Kitchen. Tickets $35.
Next Feature Farm Dinner: Maple Spring Gardens & Perry-winkle Farm

Fresh, organic, local tomatoes from Ken Dawson's Maple Spring Gardens have long been a seasonal favorite at Weaver Street Market. Located on 61 acres just north of Hillsborough, Ken along with his partner, Libby Outlaw, have been providing local Farmers' Markets and Weaver Street Market with close to a hundred varieties of organic produce since 1984 when Ken became a full-time organic farmer.

Every Saturday morning, Cathy Jones and Michael Perry of Perry-winkle Farm can be found playing the "big show" of the Carrboro Farmers' Market, providing top chefs and the community alike with an extended product list of flowers, herbs, green garlic, carrots, turnips, potatoes, cherry tomatoes, leeks and their signature crop of a spring and fall green salad mix with edible flowers.

The chefs at Panzanella have a wonderful time creating amanzing dishes from the bounty of our local farmers. Don't miss this opportunity to experience local delights!
