What's for Lunch?
By Cat Moleski, Features Editor
Yup, it's back to school and time to figure out how to pack a quick, nutritious, and tasty lunch for everybody in your house. There are lots of great ideas for lunch from the traditional sandwich, fruit, veggie, & cookie combo to a single aseptic box of Spirutein. For die-hard sandwich lovers, Weaver Street Market has a variety of sliced breads and offers roast beef, ham, turkey, and salami sliced to order. Pick up some string cheese, Bonnie Bell Gouda singles, or sliced cheese singles to add to or eat along side your sandwich. How about a bagel sandwich? Look for individual size plain cream cheese in our deli section or buy some of our specialty-flavored cream cheeses. A piece of fresh fruit is a terrific match for any sandwich. More...

What's for Lunch? (continued)
Tired of sandwiches? Make a variety pack lunch with yogurt, fruit, veggies, and a treat. To save prep time in the morning, snack-pack as much as you can at night or on the weekend. Buy peanuts, trail mix, sesame sticks, banana chips, or animal cookies in the bulk section, and make your own lunch mix. Some of the mixes have bits of chocolate in them that can satisfy that sweet tooth without being too much of an indulgence. Break down bags of peeled carrots and grape tomatoes or cut up a bunch of celery into lunch-size quantities. Even broccoli, radishes, red peppers, and cauliflower can be chopped ahead and bagged up for a quick addition to the brown bag. Johnny won't eat it, you say? What about you? Look for pre-packaged macaroni salads and similar items in our Grab 'N Go case to beef up the brown bag. Variety snack packs can get you through the day and keep the calories at bay. Just for fun, how about packaging up some Cornichon pickles, olives, or grape leaves? Moist items will need to be stored in plastic, but look for paper sandwich bags in our dry goods section for an alternative to plastic sandwich bags.

If you have a really picky eater or are just plain worried your child is not getting enough nutrients, Weaver Street Market now carries the soy based protein drink Spirutein in aseptic containers. With 60% of daily calcium requirements and 22 grams of protein, this little drink packs a wallop of nutrition. So Make Weaver Street Market your first stop for back to school lunch items and keep those lunches on their toes!

Local Producer: Hanover Park Vineyard, Yadkinville, NC
By Peg Conway, Wine Buyer
On our Wine Tour, we will visit Michael and Amy Helton, winemaker and owners of Hanover Park Vineyard. When I first met Michael Helton almost five years ago, his enthusiasm was contagious. Their wines, however, spoke for themselves. Michael and Amy's inspiration came during a month long honeymoon in the south of France in the summer of 1996. Michael and Amy returned home with a love of French wines and the countryside. By December, Hanover Park Vineyard began. Teachers and Artists by trade; they became farmers and winemakers almost overnight. Their passion is inspiring.

When I finally made it to their winery just this spring, I didn't want to leave. Tasting their amazing, French-inspired viniferous delights and listening to Michael and Amy talk about the vineyards, their latest experiments with fruit wine, and port, I was totally hooked. I even considered asking them if they needed a field hand, I was ready to move to Yadkinville and make grape growing my new life!
Local Producer: Thomas Gourmet Foods, Greensboro, NC
By Cat Moleski, Features Editor
During this month of local producer tastings, Weaver Street Market has been fortunate to host many of the owners and founders of these great local businesses. Last Saturday Mr. Thomas of Thomas Gourmet Food was in the Carrboro store sampling his meat & poultry marinade and marinara pasta sauce. All the Thomas sauces are made to be low in fat and sodium, with high quality ingredients. Mr. Thomas sampled the meat marinade over baked chicken and it was delightfully light and tasty. The marinara pasta sauce tasted so fresh it was hard to believe it came out of a jar. Stop in and check out the Thomas sauces and marinade section - they produce a divine BBQ sauce, too!

After Hours this Thursday from 6-8 pm
After Hours has grown to be one of the "best of the best" nights in Carrboro. It's old-fashioned fun with free music by local bands and the chance to relax on a blanket and picnic with your family on fresh grilled food by local charities. Kids of all ages can dance the night away or catch-up with friends.

Weaver Street Market loves to see people enjoying our lawn and connecting with their community. To keep this event a safe and fun place, we ask that you only bring friendly, well-behaved dogs on leashes and please clean up after them. We want the children who attend our event to have a safe and happy time too, so we ask that they not be allowed to climb the trees or the Crepe Myrtles. Lastly, please enjoy the fountain from its perimeter. Thank you for your help in making this event safe and fun for everyone.

August 18 - Brown Mountain Lights - pop twang with bluegrass sensibilities
August 25 - Tristeza - Bossa Nova

After Hours & the ALE Regulations

We know how much fun it is to sit on the lawn and drink some beers, but unfortunately North Carolina law forbids Weaver Street Market from selling six packs for consumption outside. You can buy beer by the glass outside at the tasting table, singles, or half-gallon Growlers from Carolina Brewery, but please—be kind to our cashiers and don't buy a six pack to take outside.

Internationalist Books cooking at After Hours this Week

The Internationalist Bookstore has a long history of providing the community with a venue for alternative books, information, and a place to gather. Started in 1981 by Bob Sheldon, the Internationalist has undergone a few incarnations, one in 1991 when it became an all-volunteer run organization, and again in 1999 when it adopted a non-profit member organization status.

Members can use the facilities to create zines, publish their poetry, or contact the media with information about local happenings. They show movies with current event themes on Monday nights and publish a monthly newsletter. The shop itself is small, but offers a concentration of alternative political titles, feminist and minority writings, and magazines that don't always make it to the commercial shelves.

As with any member-supported organization, Internationalist Books can only continue to provide these services to the community if the community supports them. Membership is $20 a year and members receive a 10% discount on all merchandise. If you haven't already been by the Internationalist, they are located at 405 West Franklin Street.

Call for Candidates

Board elections, as always, take place in October, but now's the time to start thinking if you're interested in running for a consumer-owner seat on Weaver Street Market's Board of Directors. One of the benefits of being a WSM owner is participating in governing the store, by voicing your views on ownership issues and electing members to the Board of Directors. You also may serve on the Board yourself.

Any owner in good standing for one year is eligible to be a Board member, and is encouraged to consider nominating him/herself or another owner.

Candidate application packets may be picked up at the customer service desk in the Carrboro store or from a manager at Southern Village. These packets include background information, details of the election process, and how to learn more about the Board and its processes. Candidates for elected positions on the Board will acquaint themselves with board governance policies and procedures prior to application by at least one of the following actions: reviewing the current Board policy notebook, discussing his/her candidacy with a Board member, attending a WSM Policy Governance training, or attending a board meeting. Such preparation prior to applying will help a prospective candidate to decide whether serving on the Board is a commitment he/she wishes to make. Candidates are expected to present applications in the established form by the published date; no write-in candidates are allowed.

You are encouraged to participate! Consider nominating yourself, or simply vote for a candidate in October. Exercising your rights as an owner is critical to WSM remaining a successful and vital part of the community.

Totally Local Dinner
Every summer Panzanella sharpens our focus on local abundance with a menu created to showcase the fabulous products grown or produced within 250 miles of Carrboro. So what's so important about LOCAL? Enjoying what's freshest right here right now means great taste and better nutrition. But you are also helping to support a local business, farming, that needs your support. North Carolina is losing hundreds of farms every year and that means we are bringing in more food from out of state that has been in transit how long and how much fuel did it burn to get it here? Shouldn't we be enjoying the goodness that can grow in our farmers' fields, putting money back into our community? It's all about becoming a more self sufficient community that preserves the natural rural countryside around us and appreciating the ability our farmers have to bring these foods to our table. This dinner not only supports local farmers and producers by using their products for this menu but a portion of the profits go directly to the Sustainable Farming Program at Central Carolina Community College in Pittsboro.

So come out and celebrate our summer harvest on Wednesday August 31 at the Totally Local Dinner at Panzanella Restaurant in Carrboro. They will be serving up a delicious menu that is thousands of miles fresher and just around the corner. Dinner is served from 5:30-9:00 pm. Call for reservations for parties of six or more, 929-6626.

Next Feature Farm Dinner: Maple Spring Gardens & Perry-winkle Farm Tomorrow!
Join Panzanella for the next Feature Farm Dinner on Wednesday August 17, featuring a menu of foods created from ingredients grown by Perry-winkle Farm and Maple Spring Gardens. Dinner, 5:30-9:00 pm. Parties of six or more, call 929-6626 to make a reservation.

Fresh, organic, local tomatoes from Ken Dawson's Maple Spring Gardens have long been a seasonal favorite at Weaver Street Market. Located on 61 acres just north of Hillsborough, Ken along with his partner, Libby Outlaw, have been providing local Farmers' Markets and Weaver Street Market with close to a hundred varieties of organic produce since 1984 when Ken became a full-time organic farmer.

Every Saturday morning, Cathy Jones and Michael Perry of Perry-winkle Farm can be found playing the "big show" of the Carrboro Farmers' Market, providing top chefs and the community alike with an extended product list of flowers, herbs, green garlic, carrots, turnips, potatoes, cherry tomatoes, leeks and their signature crop of a spring and fall green salad mix with edible flowers.

The chefs at Panzanella have a wonderful time creating amanzing dishes from the bounty of our local farmers. Don't miss this opportunity to experience local delights!
