Hurricane Relief Fundraiser

To aid the victims of Hurricane Katrina, Weaver Street Market and Panzanella will host a special fundraiser dinner on Monday September 26 at Panzanella from 5-9 pm. We’ll have live Cajun music by T-Monde and others, and a special prix-fixe menu featuring Cajun and Creole dishes. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased in advance at our Carrboro Service Desk or at Panzanella

We have chosen to send money to the American Red Cross now and in the future we will be looking to send donations to the Cooperative Development Foundation to help co-ops in the Louisiana and Mississippi area recover. In addition to the fundraiser dinner, you’ll find donation jars at all our cash registers. More

Hurricane relief continued
To celebrate the cultural heritage of the New Orleans area we'll be featuring recipes by some natives. The first recipe is from Windy Willer our new Training and Development Manager. Windy has worked at Weaver Street Market for over ten years and grew up in Opelausas, Louisiana where currently many people from the city have taken refuge. Look for favorite recipes from our other staff with roots and families in Louisiana for the next few weeks.

Recipe: Shrimp a la Creole: By Louisiana native, Windy Willer
2 tbsp olive oil
2 medium onions chopped
1 chopped bell pepper
1 minced jalapeno
1 bunch of chopped parsley (some reserved for garnish)
1/2 cup dry white wine
4 cups chopped canned tomatoes (fire roasted is great)
1 tbsp minced garlic
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1-cup tomato sauce
Salt to taste
1/2 tsp crushed dried mint
Tabasco
2 pounds raw peeled shrimp

In a large high-walled skillet, heat the oil on medium-high heat. Sautee the onions, peppers, and most of the parsley until the onions are clear. Add the rest of the ingredients except the shrimp and heat to a boil. Lower the heat, cover and simmer until the tomatoes fall apart: about an hour. Add the shrimp and continue to simmer, stirring occasionally for 30 minutes. Serve over fluffy cooked white rice and garnish with reserved chopped parsley.

After Hours this Thursday from 6-8 pm
After Hours has grown to be one of the "best of the best" nights in Carrboro. It's old-fashioned fun with free music by local bands and the chance to relax on a blanket and picnic with your family on fresh grilled food by local charities. Kids of all ages can dance the night away or catch-up with friends.

Weaver Street Market loves to see people enjoying our lawn and connecting with their community. To keep this event a safe and fun place, we ask that you only bring friendly, well-behaved dogs on leashes and please clean up after them. We want the children who attend our event to have a safe and happy time too, so we ask that they not be allowed to climb the trees or the Crepe Myrtles. Lastly, please enjoy the fountain from its perimeter. Thank you for your help in making this event safe and fun for everyone.

September 8 - The Hushpuppies - old time music (last After Hours)

After Hours & the ALE Regulations

We know how much fun it is to sit on the lawn and drink some beers, but unfortunately North Carolina law forbids Weaver Street Market from selling six packs for consumption outside. You can buy beer by the glass outside at the tasting table, singles, or half-gallon Growlers from Carolina Brewery, but please—be kind to our cashiers and don't buy a six pack to take outside.

Trading Path Association Cooking at After Hours this Week

The Trading Path Association is a non-profit group dedicated to finding and protecting remnants of America's first frontier here in the southeast. By doing so, the Association will make it possible to tell the story of a time when Red, White, and Black people blended cultures and blood in the birthplace of the South. As there are few documents with which to tell this story, the Association seeks out and protects the archaeology of this hidden moment from destruction by urban sprawl and other such accidents. To raise public consciousness about the threatened artifacts, the Trading Path Association leads monthly hikes along the ancient trade routes of the southeast. The group was founded in 1999 and has worked since then to create public and political awareness and support for their goals.

Weaver Street Market Call for Candidates
Board elections, as always, take place in October, but now's the time to start thinking if you're interested in running for a consumer-owner seat on Weaver Street Market's Board of Directors. One of the benefits of being a WSM owner is participating in governing the store, by voicing your views on ownership issues and electing members to the Board of Directors. You also may serve on the Board yourself.

Any owner in good standing for one year is eligible to be a Board member, and is encouraged to consider nominating him/herself or another owner.

Candidate application packets may be picked up at the customer service desk in the Carrboro store or from a manager at Southern Village. These packets include background information, details of the election process, and how to learn more about the Board and its processes. Candidates for elected positions on the Board will acquaint themselves with board governance policies and procedures prior to application by at least one of the following actions: reviewing the current Board policy notebook, discussing his/her candidacy with a Board member, attending a WSM Policy Governance training, or attending a board meeting. Such preparation prior to applying will help a prospective candidate to decide whether serving on the Board is a commitment he/she wishes to make. Candidates are expected to present applications in the established form by the published date; no write-in candidates are allowed.

You are encouraged to participate! Consider nominating yourself, or simply vote for a candidate in October. Exercising your rights as an owner is critical to WSM remaining a successful and vital part of the community.

Applications are due September 12, by 9 pm.

Next Feature Farm Dinner: Timberwood Organics

Wednesday, September 14, 5:30 - 9:00 pm
Timberwood Organics: Ray and Maria Christopher
Ray Christopher, his wife Maria, her sister and their collective children work the 4-6 acres around their house that make up Timberwood Organics. They plant by hand and are certified organic. They squeeze an amazing amount of life and service out of their fields.
In addition to selling wholesale to stores like Weaver Street Market, Timberwood Organics is a Community Supported Agriculture which has 100-150 member households. This is their fourth season delivering organic vegetables to members' homes and this year Maria will add fresh baked bread to their offerings. Ray also keeps a dozen beehives to fertilize the crops. Recently, Ray purchased ten acres up the road to be used as a distribution hub for farmers in our area and the eastern part of North Carolina. This is an important development for local and regional organic farmers. It means a central location for collection, storage and distribution of produce with more attention to sales and quality and more input from the growers. Consumers in our area should see increased availability and higher quality organic produce. This is a great service to our community.
