By Steve Carter, WSM SV Produce Manager
As the summer heat begins to dissipate, the focus of the produce department begins to shift towards our fall crops. Pumpkins and winter squash are arriving on the scene by the bin full, and I know that you can hardly wait to tuck into your first Delicata. For those of you out there who are unfamiliar with the winter squash, I hope you'll stop in and try some. With all the variety of colors and shapes, a few winter squash can really add a seasonal flair to the look of your kitchen...and if you can operate a knife and an oven, you're more than halfway to a fantastic autumn treat. Recipe: Chunky Squash Soup
Local chef and cooking instructor, Carol Barrow, resided in the center of Florence and in the province of Tuscany for ten years where she learned regional cooking from the masters: restaurant owners, farmers, family and friends. She owned Ristorante Vien under the Volta dei Peruzzi in Florence for four years. Caroleena cracks the mysterious code of Tuscan cooking and translates her very special language into easy, delicious and healthy recipes. She will be sharing recipes and tips with us from time to time. Caroleena is available to cook for you in your home. Call her at 960-8875.

Chunky Squash Soup

I love this recipe not only because I choose the vegetables that I want, but also because a chunky soup in the cool weather makes me warm all over. I also put a little crushed red pepper in, that way the heat comes from two directions!

Ingredients;
Extra virgin olive oil
Garlic cloves (leave the skin on-prevents it from burning)
Salt, pepper, and crushed red pepper
Onion (coarsely chopped)
Carrot (coins cut into halves and quarters)
Celery (ribs cut in half, then sliced down the middle)
Cabbage (coarsely chopped)
Potato (diced)
Sweet potato (diced)
Pumpkin (diced)
Zucchini (coins into quarters)
Broccoli (chopped)
Cauliflower (chopped)
Broth (whatever kind you use - miso is also a good base)
White beans (one can is about the right size) cooked
Ditalini pasta (optional) cooked

So, you already understand what is going on; start cooking the oil, salt and peppers on a low to medium flame. I am not giving you quantities because using one of everything, except the cabbage (just use some - not a whole head) makes an awful lot of soup. Cut the onion up and add that. Start stirring. Cut up the carrot. Add that and keep stirring. Add the celery and keep stirring...(keep going with the other vegetables in the order of the ingredients list). What we are doing is mixing the flavors and the textures. The cabbage will keep it hearty. The starches will thicken it up. Now you can add your broth. The beans add texture and protein. Don't cook it for too long (about 45 minutes). No decent Italian would ever eat a soup like this without adding pasta - you can make up you own mind. Cook the raw pasta in it - about a handful per person (but keep stirring) or cook it on the side. Serve hot with a hearty piece of bread and...

Buon Appetito!
Don't forget - always cook with love and don't be cheap!

Howard Bowers Day
Saturday October 8

Weaver Street Market will participate in the Howard Bowers Day by donating 1% of sales on October 8 to the Howard Bowers Fund.

The Howard Bowers Fund was created to strengthen the consumer cooperative sector, largely through educational programs. The fund's grants support general consumer cooperative education in the United States, educational programs for consumer co-op managers, and training for young people to pursue careers in the management of consumer-owned food co-ops. The Howard Bowers Fund was established by the Hyde Park Cooperative Society in memory of its long-time General Manager, Howard Bowers.

Why Cooperate?
By James Morgan, WSM Board Member
What is a co-op? Why do people join a co-op? Is it about price? Organic produce? Or is about something more? The prices at Costco, Walmart and Sam's Club can save you a lot of money. You can get organic produce at Food Lion and Harris Teeter. What's the difference?

For me the difference is all about ownership. Owning the store gives us power, power over what kind of products the store carries and how it does business. Owning the store cooperatively ensures that power is exercised for the benefit of the whole community. So if we want organic and local produce, sustainably grown fair trade coffees and tropical fruits, cruelty free cosmetics and so on, we can make it happen. If we want the store's employees to be properly paid and fairly treated, we can make it happen. If we want workers in distant lands who produce goods for us to be properly paid and fairly treated, we can make it happen. If we want our goods and services to be produced without destroying the environment we can make it happen. We don't have to petition, beg or plead. We can take responsibility ourselves and just do it.

And notice it's not just about the food. It's increasingly about how the store does business, how it relates with the world. By owning the store we can set rules for the business that correspond with values that we hold. Our very own Weaver Street Market is one of many thousands of co-ops across the world that have shown that it really is possible to operate a thriving, growing, significant, important business without losing sight of our values and ethics.

That's why I my co-op!
