By Cat Moleski, Features Writer
As a lactose intolerant woman I've had to supplement my calcium intake for many years and I'm not good at taking pills. I've tried the liquids, the tablets, the chewable, and the capsules. I even tried the first round of chocolates with calcium. The liquid and chewable calciums were really hard to take day after day because of the chalky taste and even the soft chewable chocolates had an after taste that didn't inspire me to buy more. Now the Thompson Candy Company of Meriden, Connecticut, has launched a new product called Adora. These small, 1-ounce disks of milk chocolate and dark chocolate contain 500 milligrams of calcium as well as Vitamin D and K. And they taste pretty good, too. Just as good as any candy bar! More

New Fun Way to Get Your Calcium continued
Two disks provide 100% of your daily calcium need and 50% of the vitamin D and K needs. Vitamin D improves calcium absorption, while vitamin K helps bones process calcium. A company representative says, "Additionally, dark chocolate's anti-oxidant properties are becoming widely recognized."

If you hate taking pills as much as I do, you might find Adora a quick, easy, and fun way to get the right amount of calcium. Look for them on sale in the Wellness department this month.

Passato de Zucchini

When the farmer's wife made me this summertime soup (as well as giving me a demijohn of first-press, extra-virgin olive oil), I thought that I had died and gone to peasant heaven. This recipe goes so well in the summer (as well as the winter) because fresh picked, local produce is sooo much better than what supermarkets have to offer.

When I eat a delicious meal like this, I usually don't eat a heavy second course. I keep some aged pecorino toscano cheese or some salami cacciatore or soppressata around just for an occasion like this. A glass of Chianti, a bowl of soup, a piece of ciabbata, rustico or whole wheat bread an some cheese and salami. Finish the meal off with a delicious piece of ripe fruit and you will know why God chose the Pope, who resides at the Vatican which happens to be in Rome, which happens to be in Italy, which is the country where the province of Tuscany lies.

Now, let's get on with our recipe Ingredients:
Zucchini (as many as you want)-As with almost all vegetables-the younger (smaller), the sweeter
Onions (if you use a lot of zucchini, use a lot of onion-probably 1 small onion to 4 small zucchini
Broth (any kind; vegetable, chicken, beef, chicken and beef, etc)
Extra virgin olive oil
Salt and pepper
Freshly grated Parmigiano cheese

Boil the zucchini whole, until they are soft. When they are cooked cut off the ends. While this is going on sauté the onions that you have chopped (either way-finely or coarse) in extra virgin olive oil until they are translucent (browned a little will only enhance the flavor). Add salt and pepper to this sauté. When both of these are ready, Put them in a blender, along with some of the broth and puree them. Put the puree back in a pot and reduce this until the flavors not only amalgamate, but until the mixture reduces. You may want to add some salt or pepper. It is now ready to eat (either room temperature or hot). Serve in a bowl with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, some freshly hand-grated Parmigiano and even a little freshly ground pepper.

Buon Appetito!
Don't forget - always cook with love and don't be cheap!

National Feral Cat Day
Sunday, October 16
Stop by from 2 to 4 (on the lawn in Carrboro) and meet some ex-feral kittens and cats, ready for new homes and learn about the only humane method of controlling feral cat colonies. Also learn about "The Cat Coop" - a local sanctuary for ferals and other rescued cats and kittens.

Adopt a feral, you say? Aren't they wild? Actually, once tamed, ex-ferals can make extra special companions! They can adjust very well to inside-living and can be very, very affectionate.

We will have other animals (kittens, cats, puppies, dogs) for adoption, too - so plan on coming by. Last adoption day here at Weaver Street, six cats and two dogs found their new forever homes!

Working at Weaver Street Market/Panzanella
By Windy Niebler Willer, WSM Training Manager
Most of us have to work to survive; it is just the way of things. Some people are lucky enough to enjoy their work and look forward to what it is they do with their hands and minds everyday. There are also folks who find satisfaction in knowing that their work contributes to making the world a little bit better in some way. If I could afford to sit around eating bon-bons, I probably wouldn't be very healthy. So, it is very fortunate that I am in all three categories; I need to work, I enjoy what I do everyday , and I contribute to something I in which I deeply believe.

The work that we do at Weaver Street Market and Panzanella is very satisfying to me. I love to sell fabulous food. But the thing that really excites a gal like me is to make a bigger difference, beyond the next meal.

The board of directors where I work is responsible to the community in which I live. So, in the day-to-day operation of the cooperative, we are guided by values that enhance our community, rather than deplete it's resources. The money we make doesn't get sent off to other cities to make a few individual investors wealthier. The fruit of my labor is invested in my community in many ways; among them is local purchasing, donations, staff pay, worker-owner dividends, community events, and the support other cooperative ventures.

When I think about how I am spending my life, I first think about all the joy and contentment I get from the time spent with my family. My second thought is of the gratification I get from my job. I am a lucky woman.
