Annual Meeting Report
What would happen if a multi-national corporation bought out Weaver Street Market?

The attendees at the Cooperative's Annual Meeting this past weekend grappled with this very question during a presentation from Walden Swanson, a locally-based cooperative consultant. Really it comes down to what having the co-op here means to individuals and to the community.

On the downside, if Weaver Street Market were sold, owners at the meeting would expect less money going back into to the community, lower quality, lower wages, loss of environmental and social goals, homogenous merchandising, local money being used nationally for things that we don't agree with, and even the business closing because it is too small to be profitable for a large company to operate.

We all had a few ideas about how the store might improve, too! Better advertising might reach a larger audience and bring in more people, produce might be cheaper, check-out might be automated and therefore quicker, loss-leader sales, and, well, probably the floor in the Carrboro store would be new and level.

With National Cooperative Month coming to a close, we want to encourage all of our owners and community members to think about what cooperatives and locally-owned businesses bring to our community—and keep in our community. Thanks to all of the owners who joined us for a tasty lunch and conversation on a beautiful afternoon!

Hurricane Donation Disbursement
With your help Weaver Street Market Cooperative raised over $12,000 to aid the survivors of Hurricane Katrina. We disbursed the funds to the American Red Cross, Project Safety Net, Bayou Rescue, the Cooperative Development Fund, and Habitat for Humanity.

As first responders to disasters all around the world, the American Red Cross is constantly in need of money, supplies, and volunteers. But they can only do so much once the initial crisis has passed. It is then up to other organizations to take up the task of providing aid.

Project Safety Net is a local organization that is purchasing clothing and sending it directly to shelters in Texas and Mississippi. Their most immediate need is for underwear and shoes, but come the colder weather, they will be buying coats and toys for Christmas gifts. Learn about Project Safety Net here.

Bayou Rescue is one of the many small groups that have sprung up in response to the thousands of dogs, cats, and other pets that had to be left behind after Hurricane Katrina. This is a North Carolina group that has made several trips down to New Orleans and Mississippi to feed, transport, and rescue pets left behind in areas where people have not yet been able to return to their homes. Read the Bayou Rescue blog here.

The Cooperative Development Fund will be targeting its Katrina resources toward helping the agricultural community in the tri-state area recover. They can help rebuild businesses and replace farm equipment. Cooperatives have been key players in the development of the rural areas in the Gulf and will continue to help those communities rebuild. Learn more about the CDF here.

Habitat for Humanity is gathering funds and volunteers for their project, Operation Home Delivery. Houses are being assembled on the banks of the Mississippi as far away as St Paul, Minnesota and are being shipped by barge down the river. Habitat says this will be the largest project they have ever undertaken. Read more about Operation Home Delivery here.

Bordeaux Wine Dinner
Monday November 14, 7-9 pm in Panzanella

Other than the companionship and good cheer that is part of every Panzanella dinner, apart from the surpassing excellence of the food, and entirely discounting the fact that Bordeaux is one of the great wine regions of the world, there are any number of reasons to join us on November 14 for a (blare of trumpets, please) BORDEAUX WINE DINNER!

Bordeaux? You sniff, thinking of English gentlewomen of a certain age and their glass of claret, or of a tedious, clubby stiffness associated with cigars and the glory days before imperialism got such a bad rap.

To which I say, yes, Bordeaux. Apart from the history of its viticulture, Bordeaux is a fascinating region from both an historical and sociological perspective. Long under English rule (remember Aquitaine in all those Shakespeare history plays—that's Bordeaux) its culture of winemaking retains a whiff of Englishness that is hard to pinpoint, but palpable nonetheless. We'll discuss all of this (and more if you'd like) over all kinds of good food and wine.

So that's why you should come.
