When you shop at Weaver Street Market this holiday season, you'll once again have the chance to buy great gifts that also give back to our community. Hope for the Holidays Fund is back again after four successful seasons, and we're excited about the four local organizations we've chosen to be the recipients of this season's funds generated by special Hope for the Holiday sales. This season's organizations are: El Centro Latino; El Centro Latino grew out of a collaboration of local Latino leaders, the Orange County Task Force on Hispanic Issues, and the Orange County Partnership for Young Children's Los Ninos Task Force. The mission of El Centro Latino is to improve the quality of life for Latinos living in and around Orange County by providing educational and social services and cultural activities. They offer outreach programs for all members of the family from after school programs to financial training and ESL. More

Hope for the Holidays continued
The Chrysalis Foundation; The Chrysalis Foundation, a private non-profit organization whose mission is to provide funds and resources for the unmet needs of people living with mental illness, developmental disabilities, and substance abuse in Orange, Person, and Chatham counties. Members of the Chrysalis Foundation believe that everyone has a right to good mental health care and the funding for mental health services is a public and a private responsibility.

Agricultural Resources Center; The Agricultural Resources Center (ARC) and Pesticide Education Project (PESTed) is a non-profit organization working in North Carolina since 1986 to minimize human and environmental exposure to toxic pesticides. They watchdog public officials in North Carolina and work to improve public policy, as well as educating individuals and institutions about alternatives to toxics. They are a small grassroots organization, and our focus is on common-sense alternatives to harmful pesticides.

Reach Out & Read; The Reach Out and Read Program through the Piedmont Health Services provides a book for each child to take home with them from each clinic visit. The program not only gives out age appropriate books, but also coordinates a volunteer program to read to the young patients while they wait for their appointments. Books are distributed in both English and Spanish at the six community health centers in Central North Carolina.

How it Works: You make an automatic donation to the Hope for the Holidays Fund by buying specially marked gift items located throughout the store. Part of the purchase price of each gift marked with a special Hope for the Holidays sign will be collected in the Hope for the Holidays Fund. You are also encouraged to drop donations into the collection jars located near the cash registers.

Good cheese like fine wine should be an expression of the land from which it is produced. The Feete Family of Galax, Virginia understands this idea and has been developing their herd of Jersey cows since 1980. The cattle range freely on all-grass pastures and follow a natural rhythm of milk production from spring when grass is plentiful to late fall when the grass growth slows and everybody gets to rest.

Using only the raw milk from their herd they produce aged farmstead cheeses made in the European tradition. Mary Turner has stocked our case with their Mountaineer, Appalachian and Grayson. Stop by and ask Mary for a taste.

Shop Locally
How many shopping days are left? As the pressure mounts to fill your list of Christmas wishes, take a moment to stop and think about the impact of the money you will spend this Holiday season. Through your spending you have the power to affect many lives. When you choose to buy from a locally-owned business, your money works for you and your community.

Locally-owned businesses support other smaller businesses such as accountants, architects, computer techs, lawyers and designers. They can offer a wider selection of independently-made items or goods made by small local producers. Chain stores frequently import building designs, graphics and advertising from other locations. Payroll, taxes, and other administrative tasks are shipped out to a headquarters far away. Not to mention the pure profit dollars that simply flow out of your community, leaving behind an absentee-owned business that does not care how their actions impact your area. A locally-owned business is more likely to stay during up times and down, and to work with the needs of the community. Large chains can hold a town hostage by threatening to leave if not given what they want by officials.

Unique items offered by specialty shops add to the flavor and distinction of a town's character. Independent businesses can afford to choose products that appeal to their locale. They are often the only outlets for those special, locally- made, or hard-to-find items that can range from soaps and candles to radical books and music. So this Christmas, and the rest of the year, resist the urge to spend your dollars at the large out-of-town chain stores. Support the local guy, your neighbor, and preserve the individuality and economic health of your town.
