Holiday Gift Ideas continued
Bright, colorful, woolen, and warm all describe the hats, mittens, socks, scarves, shawls and bags from our Fair Trade partners. They're a gift of love that goes two ways; to the one you love and back to the people who labor to make these wonderful items.

The little stuffed monkey dolls also in our Wellness Department do more than make you smile. They teach us about the very real monkeys of the Columbian rainforest that are struggling to survive. Take home a Cotton-top Tamarind, Howler or Wooley Monkey doll and help preserve the habitat of these amazing creatures.

Weaver Street Market has many other great gift ideas for everyone on your list. And when you're done shopping stop by the café and renew yourself with a little treat. We'll keep the coffee hot for you.

Sing & Hum Book Signing
Saturday, December 17, 11am -2pm

Many children's books teach life lessons. Few teach children the coping mechanisms for dealing with stressful situations. A unique book, "Sing and Hum Bumblebee", by Mari Howerton, of Raleigh, NC and Maya Karen Sorensen, of Chapel Hill, NC, takes the premise of music as a healing approach and turns it into a technique for helping youngsters cope with fear, pain and other childhood challenges - with a seemingly simple device. Humming. A young bumblebee learns to accept and embrace the challenges of life by singing a song taught by the wise Queen Bee. Together, with the bumblebee, children find comfort, inner harmony, and delight.
Hope for the Holidays
When you shop at Weaver Street Market this holiday season, you'll once again have the chance to buy great gifts that also give back to our community. Hope for the Holidays Fund is back again after four successful seasons, and we're excited about the four local organizations we've chosen to be the recipients of this season's funds generated by special Hope for the Holiday sales. This season's organizations are: El Centro Latino; El Centro Latino grew out of a collaboration of local Latino leaders, the Orange County Task Force on Hispanic Issues, and the Orange County Partnership for Young Children's Los Ninos Task Force. The mission of El Centro Latino is to improve the quality of life for Latinos living in and around Orange County by providing educational and social services and cultural activities. They offer outreach programs for all members of the family from after school programs to financial training and ESL.

The Chrysalis Foundation; The Chrysalis Foundation, a private non-profit organization whose mission is to provide funds and resources for the unmet needs of people living with mental illness, developmental disabilities, and substance abuse in Orange, Person, and Chatham counties. Members of the Chrysalis Foundation believe that everyone has a right to good mental health care and the funding for mental health services is a public and a private responsibility.

Agricultural Resources Center; The Agricultural Resources Center (ARC) and Pesticide Education Project (PESTed) is a non-profit organization working in North Carolina since 1986 to minimize human and environmental exposure to toxic pesticides. They watchdog public officials in North Carolina and work to improve public policy, as well as educating individuals and institutions about alternatives to toxics. They are a small grassroots organization, and our focus is on common-sense alternatives to harmful pesticides.

Reach Out & Read; The Reach Out and Read Program through the Piedmont Health Services provides a book for each child to take home with them from each clinic visit. The program not only gives out age appropriate books, but also coordinates a volunteer program to read to the young patients while they wait for their appointments. Books are distributed in both English and Spanish at the six community health centers in Central North Carolina.

How it Works: You make an automatic donation to the Hope for the Holidays Fund by buying specially marked gift items located throughout the store. Part of the purchase price of each gift marked with a special Hope for the Holidays sign will be collected in the Hope for the Holidays Fund. You are also encouraged to drop donations into the collection jars located near the cash registers.
Feature Product: Président Brie Rounds
These delicious brie rounds are made by one of the largest cheese companies in Europe that figured out that shipping adds too much to the cost of their product so they opened cheese making facilities here in the US. They use grade A USA milk to make their old-world style cheeses. That's why this cheese is so good and so reasonably priced. Look for Président Brie Rounds in our cheese case for $4.99 each.

Cheese buyer Mary Turner would like to say "thanks" to the hard-working goats of Celebrity Dairy. The fresh goat cheese season has come to an end for 2005. The goats will be resting until the kids arrive in early February.

New Art by Nerys Levy
Vistas II: works in mixed media water colors on paper
December 13 through February 12
Reception Monday, January 9, 2006 5:30 - 7:30 pm

Working in mixed water-based media on paper, Nerys Levy portrays the forms and forces of nature—North Carolina forests and marshes, Alpine masses and glaciers, cloud formations, gardens, and architectural forms altered by time and light. She often does a series of works of the same subject in shifting light, seasons and weather. Her Dogs In Motion paintings are achieved by following her subject as it moves freely through its familiar environment.

Born in Wales and now a resident of Carrboro, North Carolina, Nerys Levy is deeply rooted in her native country's language and culture, which has influenced her painting. Levy had a first career in race relations, community work and education, working in India, the Caribbean and London. She has a Ph.D. in South Asian History from the University of London. Although she painted throughout much of her childhood, Levy began serious art studies in 1980 in La Jolla, California, working with various members of the Visual Arts Department of the University of California at San Diego.

Nerys has had many solo exhibitions, including the Galleria Santo Stefano Exhibit in Venice, Italy, the Louise Jones Brown Gallery Exhibit at Duke University, and recently at the National Humanities Center, and has participated in many group exhibitions. She has been represented by the Principle Gallery in Alexandria, Virginia. Her paintings are in many private collections in the United States and Europe.
