     Farming for a Healthier Future.
Haywood Leigh and his wife are dedicated to bringing an old-fashioned sensibility back to farming. Located near the Albemarle Sound in Plymouth, NC, Leigh’s Pork and Beef relies on time-tested methods of animal husbandry to produce premium meats that are free from unnatural additives and unnecessary processing. These are the principles Haywood Leigh first learned farming alongside his father at age 8, and they’ve guided him in his own business for over two decades.
Unlike many farmers, Leigh insists on growing and storing his own grain. He cultivates corn and soy on his land, and barters with another local farmer for hay. By splitting the labor – one plants and the other bales – both can ensure that their animals get a dependable food supply from a nearby source. In addition, Leigh’s pigs and cows are allowed to roam freely on the 45 acre farm, grazing at their leisure. Haywood plans to keep the herd small so that he can continue to focus on quality.
The Leigh’s motto, “farming for a healthier future,” reflects their commitment to sustainable,  small-scale meat production. In an age where factory farming dominates the industry, it can be hard to make a living this way but husband and wife agree the rewards are immense.

We strive to be good stewards of the land. We are committed to raising our four children, our crops and our animals in a wonderful, nurturing farming environment similar to how we were raised.
Our children help feed and water the animals and with harvesting crops. They love to raise their own pigs, cows and chickens for 4-H and just for fun. Together, we strive to be good stewards of the land that God has provided for us.
Our Farmer’s Hybrid hogs are raised on open pasture along with a few cows, with small grains for cover crops and corn for feed. We rotate our pigs periodically to graze on forages of fescue, barley, millet, clover and other mixed grasses. Along with pasture to graze, the pigs are fed a corn feed mix.
We adhere to the Animal Welfare Institute standards, practice humane husbandry skills and do not use antibiotics or growth hormones in their feeds.

Coon Rock Farm
Hillsborough, NC

Our pigs are farmer’s hybrid breed -- a blend of heritage breeds including Duroc, Poland China, Berkshire, Hampshire and Chester White. These are slower growing pigs that are well suited to pasture and are actually a cross between several of the older heritage breeds. You will never confuse these pigs with factory farming’s “the other white meat”. The meat from these pigs has real fat and real flavor. Once you have tasted this pork, raised the way it was raised for centuries before industrial farming took pigs out of nature and packed them into pig warehouses, you’ll never want factory pork again. Naturally raised pork is better tasting for you and a much better way to live for the pigs.
