Fresh local ginger and turmeric are coming!
The fresh ginger is shown on the left side in the photo, and you can see it has a thinner skin than the “cured” ginger on the right. The fresh ginger has not been stored and dried for a longer shelf life the way cured ginger is (and also onions and sweet potatoes). It has a milder flavor than cured ginger and a less fibrous texture.
This year our fresh ginger is coming from Spade and Clover Farm on Johns Island, South Carolina. They specialize in growing sub-tropical fruits and vegetables well-suited to their southern climate.
Fresh turmeric (shown in the center of the photo) is about one or two weeks away from harvest and will be coming from Maple Spring Gardens in Cedar Grove. Like the fresh ginger, this turmeric is not cured and has a milder flavor than dried turmeric. It looks similar to ginger but has a distinct orange color. It’s great for adding to stir fries or curry dishes, or for brewing fresh turmeric tea!
