Art:K12 is an exhibition program at our Carrboro store’s cafe that focuses on artwork created by local children and youth. This month’s exhibit features works from Annie Cramer’s and Kris Fox’s classes at Seawell Elementary School and will be on display from Monday, February 20 through Sunday, March 26, 2017.
Kindergarten: Shapes
Crayon resist and watercolor paints are used to create a variety of overlapping shapes and textures. Students discussed non-objective art: pictures that do not depict a tangible object.
1st Grade: Sweaters
Watercolor paints are combined with crayon resist technique to create textile patterns. Students first looked at repeating patterns in clothing, and considered the difference between a pattern and a design.
2nd Grade: Wacky Hair
This line study project encourages exploration of a variety of line gestures and textures.
3rd Grade: Winter Trees
Winter is the perfect time to study the structure of a tree without leaves. Students used white paint to add snow to the top surfaces of the limbs.
4th Grade: Line Study
The 4th grade line study project focuses on experimenting with contour lines to create depth and interest.
5th Grade: Wycinanki
5th grade students studied the art of wycinanki, the Polish word for cut paper. The traditional designs date back to a time when Polish sheep farmers used sheep skins to cover their windows and cut the skins into decorative shapes with their sheep shears. The designs are symmetrical and cut from a single piece of paper. Spruce trees and birds are the most popular motifs.
