DESCRIPTION:Look for the teens of Transplanting Traditions Community Farm outside our Carrboro store. They’ll be sharing a bit of what the farm produces. Transplanting Traditions works with refugees from Burma\, enabling them to preserve their farming traditions\, afford healthy and culturally sensitive food\, and give back to the refugee community. The farm received a 2017 Cooperative Community Fund grant to build a commercial vegetable processing station at the farm. \nSign up to attend a community workday. We’ll have a tour and learn about the farm\, and then help complete major farm projects alongside community members and farmers: painting a new barn\, mulching pathways\, and weeding. The workday happens on Saturday\, September 23\, from 9 to 1 PM.

We’re celebrating southern artisan cheesemakers and North Carolina craft brewers with the natural and delicious pairing of cheeses and beers. There will be live music by the Ivory Boys. Bring your friends and family! \nTransplanting Traditions began as a project of the Orange County Partnership for Young Children to adapt refugee farmers from Burma to farming in North Carolina. It has turned into a community space for the families who farm there and the entire refugee community. Farmers grow crops like snake gourd and water spinach that are native to Burma\, as well as medicinal plants. Growing their own healthy food insulates the families from food insecurity and prevents illness. The growers share the farm’s abundance with others in the community through donated CSA shares\, distribution by PORCH\, and direct gifts. Feed an alpaca or two! There will be raw fleece on display to touch; you’ll see why alpaca is called a luxury fiber. Meet the chickens of Perry Farm Alpacas: over 20 breeds plus a couple of chicks born on the farm. The eggs they produce are truly free range and come in every color that chickens can make. Say hello the farm protectors\, two Anatolian Shepherd Dogs. They live with the flock and the herd\, keeping every member safe from the many predators in the area. \nStart you holiday shopping early. Browse a variety of hand-made alpaca fleece products\, including scarves\, hats and gloves\, all made in the USA. \nNo reservations are required. DESCRIPTION:The Lug-a-Jug 6K event is a chance to learn about clean water in Africa while raising money for United Solar Initiative (USI)\, a nonprofit that brings clean water to communities in Africa. The second annual 6K is at Southern Community Park in Chapel Hill from 9 AM to 2 PM on September 30. \nUSI believes that clean water is a basic human right and that together we can end the water crisis in our lifetime. USI empowers developing communities worldwide through solar energy solutions. Over the past year\, they have been working with World Vision to solarize water pumps throughout villages in Ghana to make clean water more accessible. In addition\, USI trained dozens of World Vision staff in various African countries on solar pumping systems and increased their local capacity to maintain them. \nIn addition to raising funds\, the Lug-a-Jug 6K raises awareness by simulating what women and children do in Africa every day just to get water: they walk around 6K to get it. Lug-a-Jug participants sign up in teams of three to seven people and carry an empty jug for the first three kilometers. At the midway point\, volunteers will fill up the jug from a creek\, and teams will try and carry the filled jug back to the finish line. SUMMARY:Paperhand Puppet Intervention and Halloween Costume Parade (rescheduled)
DESCRIPTION:RESCHEDULED \nJoin us for a Paperhand Puppet Intervention Puppet Show and Halloween Parade sponsored by School of Rock Chapel Hill\, Weaver Street Market\, Southern Village\, and Kidzu Children’s Museum! \nAn interactive 45 minute show for all ages will feature favorite creatures and characters. The performance will be followed by a Halloween costume parade around Market Street. \nPaperhand Puppet Intervention is a puppet theater company based out of Saxapahaw\, NC. For 17 years they have created large-scale puppet extravaganzas complete with giant puppets\, masks\, shadow puppets\, stilt dancing\, painted flats\, and live music. It’s a show for all ages!

SUMMARY:RSVVP Day
DESCRIPTION:Participating restaurants contribute 10% of their total proceeds on RSVVP Day (from breakfast\, lunch\, dinner and in-between snacks) to benefit the IFC’s FoodFirst food programs: Food Pantry and Community Kitchen. Last year 103 restaurants and their customers raised more than $24\,000 for IFC hunger-relief programs\, bringing the 28-year total to more than $500\,000.  The 2017 goal is to raise $25\,000. \nOur cafes all participate.
