Jonathan Ray is the 8th generation of his family to farm on the land at Cates Corner Farm, recognized as an NC Century Farm by the NCDA. His parents and grandparents were dairymen until the passing of his grandfather in the 1990s. The farm lay mostly dormant from then on until 2009, when Jonathan decided to repurpose the land into a sustainable vegetable farm, starting the process of freeing the land and historic buildings of vegetative overgrowth. Now, in 2016, Jonathan and his wife Audrey grow over forty varieties of vegetables, focusing on heirloom tomatoes and an impressive crop of shiitake mushrooms, using only all-natural fertilizers and no synthetic sprays. Look for their mushrooms, tomatoes, and more at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro!
