Debbie Roos’s love affair with the natural world began long ago, but she started taking pictures in earnest during her time in the Peace Corps. Now an award-winning agricultural agent with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension in Chatham County, Debbie works to promote sustainable farming in our area. In her spare time, she snaps shots of everything from honeybees to old tractors.
A gifted gardener and beekeeper, Debbie takes many of her pictures in her own garden. She focuses on delicate details like an unfurling flower bud, or the intricacies of an orb spider’s web. Her snapshots of farm animals convey a wealth of personalities, from a wide-eyed goat at Celebrity Dairy to the sociable Holsteins at Maple View Farm. Other images feature area farmers, the hard-working souls Debbie calls “our local heroes.”
To celebrate the agricultural diversity of our region, Debbie has turned her pictures into elegant greeting cards. Printed on recycled card stock with soy-based inks, each image is labeled by hand. These thoughtful cards are a lovely way to share your sentiments and support the work of a talented photographer and tireless advocate for sustainable farming.
