Weaver Street Market is excited to have Good Bowls back on its shelves! Good Bowls are a ‘meal with a mission’ with the goals of supporting the local food system and promoting food equity in North Carolina.
In 2018 Weaver Street Market participated in a study to develop and test recipes for Good Bowls, by selling the bowls and sampling them in our stores. This pilot program for Good Bowls was a remarkable success, generating the information needed by the Good Bowls team to move forward while at the same time selling 2,400 bowls at the three Weaver Street Markets, the Durham Co-op Market, and ten corner stores, both rural and urban.
Good Bowls are the creation of Chapel Hill nutrition professor Dr. Alice Ammerman. All bowls are based on the Mediterranean diet and feature abundant, seasoned, roasted vegetables; whole grains; and healthy oils. The recipes are adapted for local taste preferences and include Tex-Mex styles, Asian influence, and traditional southern flavors. The producer of Good Bowls, Equiti Foods, sources as many ingredients as they can from local farms and are continually making new partnerships to help ensure they have access to fresh local vegetables throughout the year.
They believe that everybody should have access to nutritious food and work to provide cost-subsidized Good Bowls to communities that might not otherwise have easy access to nutritious options. This includes working in blue-collar worksites in rural North Carolina to help provide workers with access to a healthy lunch option at a reduced price using frozen food vending machines.
Good Bowls and Weaver Street Market share the mission of supporting the local food system and promoting food equity in North Carolina. Do good while eating well!
