Each spring, we purchase plants from J&B Herb Farm in Roxboro, NC. We love these herbs because they’re great quality plants, organically grown by a locally owned and operated company. Owners John and Burton operate 20 greenhouses and ship plants all up and down the southeastern United States. And they use biodegradable pots made from rice hulls to boot.
The herbs are great for container gardens as well as planting in the ground. They can be paired with flowering annuals for a dramatic appearance. (Pair upright herbs and flowers with ones that cascade over the side of your container: include “thriller, filler, and spiller”!) Herbs that won’t grow too large or crowd each other out can be combined in mixed container gardens. Candidates for a mixed container are basil, dill, chives, cilantro, parsley, tarragon, and thyme.
Herbs that grow vigorously such as mint, oregano, and lemon balm can be kept in check by growing in a large pot or barrel. Mediterranean herbs like rosemary, thyme, and lavender thrive in well-drained soil, and can benefit from being grown in a container.
