Chad and Sarah founded Smiling Hara, LLC, a family-owned business in the mountains of North Carolina. Smiling Hara is dedicated to sustainability, to supporting local farmers, and to producing the highest quality, freshest tempeh there is. Tempeh is made from fermented legumes, often soybeans. Because the whole bean is fermented, tempeh contains more fiber than tofu. It’s super high in protein. Tempeh also has trace minerals, antioxidants, amino acids, and iron. Smiling Hara tempeh is GMO-free, vegan, and gluten-free (although not made in a dedicated facility).
In addition to traditional soy-based tempeh, Smiling Hara produces “hempeh,” made with soy-free legumes like peanuts and nutrient-rich hemp seeds. Hempeh is easily digested, and (because of the hemp seeds) filled with omega-3 and 6 essential fats.
Smiling Hara pays a living wage to their team of employees and is Living Wage Certified by Just Economics in western North Carolina. At their kitchen in Barnardsville, they make a fresh batch of tempeh every week.
