For two weeks, WSM shoppers can donate bags of fresh apples for food bank families for a year. The campaign runs from Wednesday, October 21 through Tuesday, November 3.
Community Goal: To provide a total of 8,500 bags (or 40,000 pounds) of fresh apples for OCIM (Hillsborough) and IFC (Carrboro-Chapel Hill). Goals for each store are
- Carrboro: 3,700 bags of apples
- Hillsborough: 2,900 bags of apples
- Southern Village: 1,800 bags of apples
- Weaver Street Market Food House: 100 bags of apples
Shoppers will be able to donate
- “2 Bags of Apples” (10 lbs)—$7.50 donation
- “4 Bags of Apples” (20 lbs)—$15 donation
- “8 Bags of Apples” (40 lbs)—$30 donation
Four times a year, Weaver Street Market hosts a food campaign that features its Community Food Partners. Our fall campaign features two local food banks. One of the greatest challenges food banks face is acquiring donations of fresh produce. For this campaign, we’re asking shoppers to help us provide bags of fresh apples for the families using these food banks.
Orange Congregations in Mission (OCIM) in Hillsborough is a private, non-profit ministry that serves families in crisis who live in northern Orange County, including Hillsborough. In 2014, its food pantry assisted 8,946 individuals with a week’s worth of groceries. 85 cents of every dollar donated is used to help families in need.
Interfaith Council (IFC) in Carrboro-Chapel Hill is a non-denominational social service organization that provides basic services to combat poverty, hunger, and homelessness in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. IFC’s food pantry provides around 1,300 bags of groceries every month to those in need.
Both organizations receive referrals from local social service organizations and rely on donations from businesses, community groups, individuals, schools, and churches. The organizations have limited staff support and rely on volunteers to receive, sort, and stock donated food.
Thank you, community members, for participating!
