We now carry San Lucas avocado oil. Avocado oil is great for frying foods (as well as roasting and other forms of baking) because it has a high smoke point of around 500 °F. (For comparison, refined [high heat] canola oil’s smoke point is about 400 °F, and olive oil’s can be even lower.) At its smoke point, an oil begins burning, which results in a loss in flavor and nutrients. Avocado oil can be heated without this occurring.
Avocado oil has many health benefits. It contains chlorophyll, which fights anemia, reduces blood toxins, produces red blood cells, and helps maintain a healthy intestine and liver. It has almost no saturated fat or cholesterol, but lots of heart-healthy monounsaturated fatty acids. It also prevents free radical damage. Avocado oil is high in vitamins A, D, and E. You can even use it on your hair or skin. Read more about the benefits at San Lucas’s website.
Avocado oil, made from the flesh of the avocado, has a lovely green color and a flavor described on Wikipedia as “an avocado flavor, with grassy and butter/mushroom-like flavors.” Because of its flavor, many people use it as a dressing or ingredient. The San Lucas website says that “It also is a carrier for other flavors, bringing out the best in all of your favorite foods.”
If you haven’t yet tried it, look for it in our stores now.
