WSM’s Cooperative Community Fund (CCF) awarded grants of $3,800 to three community projects that connect young people and families with information and tools needed to grow or prepare healthy food. The groups will host activities related to their projects the Co-op Fair on Sunday.
- Chapel Hill High School was awarded for $940 for renovations to its student garden beds. The project funds will be used to repair the school’s 25 garden beds and to purchase high-quality soil and seeds. At the Co-op Fair, CHHS teacher William Richards and students from the Green Tiger club will talk to owners about growing fresh organic vegetables at home. The students will show owners how to plant and fertilize spinach seeds to take home to grow.
- TABLE was awarded $1,000 for the expansion of their field trip project—TABLE On the Go. TABLE On the Go and SnackChef are TABLE’s nutrition education programs. At the Co-op Fair, program manager Julia Baker and TABLE volunteers will talk to owners about upcoming field trips to Carolina Campus Community Garden. Kids attending the fair will prepare a fun healthy version of s’mores made with Cabot cheddar cheese and Equal Exchange chocolate and bananas.
- PORCH was awarded $1,860 for the continuation and expansion of their nutritional education project—PORCH Cooks. PORCH Cooks aims to increase healthy, fresh food consumption by ensuring families know how to prepare the fresh food they receive through the Food for Families program. At the Co-op Fair, director Debbie Horwitz and PORCH Board member Kenlyn Young will sample Summer Pasta Salad—one of the recipes included in the PORCH Cooks cookbook.
To generate more funds for future CCF grants, we’ll be selling raffle tickets at the Co-op Fair, for gift baskets featuring Riojana wines and Cabot cheeses. Cabot Co-op Creamery will match the funds we earn, so remember to bring some cash.
