Shred-a-thon 2015
Orange County residents and small businesses and local government employees that work for the County or for Carrboro, Chapel Hill, or Hillsborough can have their personal documents (up to 5 bags) shredded at no cost. Events are from 10 to 2 and shredding takes place on-site. Please remove paper clips and other non-paper items.
- Thursday, October 8 at University Place, at the corner of Estes Drive and Willow Street, Chapel Hill. Park and walk-up service. Grocery carts will be available but bring your own cart or hand truck if you have one.
- Saturday, October 10, 2015 at Hampton Pointe Recycling Drop-Off Site (behind the Home Depot), Hwy. 86, Hillsborough. Drive-through service only.
Composting Class
Saturday, October 17, 10 to 11:30 am at the Solid Waste Administrative Office (1207 Eubanks Rd, Chapel Hill). Learn the basics of composting indoors using worms and outdoors using a variety of recipes and containers from Orange County’s seasoned composting expert Muriel Williman. No registration necessary, and children are welcome if accompanied by a compost curious adult. Free.
Mulch Sale
Until October 31, high quality MULCH is on sale for only $15.00/three cubic yard scoop at the Orange County Landfill, 1514 Eubanks Rd. This scoop will fill the bed of a standard pick-up truck. Hours: Monday through Friday from 8 am to 3 pm, Saturday from 8 to noon. Cash or checks only, and you must have a truck or trailer. Orange County staff will load, you bring a tarp to cover your load.

Watershed Cleanups
The recent rain threatens to drag litter and debris into our waterways and ultimately to the ocean. Apart from eschewing single-use plastics in the first place, people can help by picking up items that got away. The following events are service learning credit ready for high school students.

Free Leaf Mulch Loading
The Carrboro Public Works Department will load appropriate vehicles with free leaf mulch on October 9, 16, & 30 noon to 3 pm. The Public Works is located at 100 Public Works Drive, then follow the signs to the leaf pile! Rules:
- Carrboro residents only. Must display valid ID.
- Participants must complete waver of liability prior to loading.
- Pick-up trucks and similar sized trailers only. No commercial vehicles or dump trucks.
- 3 Cubic Yard Limit per vehicle per visit.
- Loads must be properly secured before leaving site (i.e. covered with a tarp or otherwise contained to prevent debris from entering the roadway).
