Turmeric! It’s a buzz word in the foodie community these days, and with good reason. Turmeric root, a relative of ginger root but with warmer, more peppery qualities, has powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. You can purchase turmeric dried or in capsule form in the wellness aisle, but it is often hard to find as a fresh, whole root. Luckily we have some in stock now from Eastern Carolina Organics member farm Spade and Clover Gardens in Johns Island, SC.
Fresh turmeric root, when you can get your hands on some, is more beneficial than the root in dried form. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is partially lost during the dehydrating process, as are the beneficial volatile oils present in the fresh root.
Try making a tea with fresh turmeric root, or add it to curries, stir fries, pickles, dressings, or smoothies. It’s available for a limited time at all Weaver Street Market locations.
