Creating Green Heffa Farms
Green Heffa Farms, co-founded by Clarenda “Cee” Stanley, is not only a farm, but also a tea company, a natural health brand, and an educational resource. Raised largely by maternal grandparents who taught her to always grow organically, conscientiously, and consciously – Cee was taught to honor and respect the land. While from an agrarian family in Alabama’s Black Belt, Cee did not see herself as a farmer.
Nevertheless, in 2018, she created Green Heffa Farms. In 2019, Cee found herself being solely responsible for Green Heffa Farms and from there, she began to re-imagine the legacy she wanted to leave for her children and grandchildren. There is an old sharecropper’s cabin from the 1850s on the farm that she restored to have dedicated space to blend her herbs and expand storage capacity. During the restoration, she commissioned an original mural from local artist Georgia Tardy. “ [The Cabin] has come a long way, figuratively and literally. “We Grow Slow So We Don’t Owe”
Green Heffa Farms seeks to defy stereotypes and remove barriers for others who are turning to farming for a different quality of life and want to live well while doing good for others by growing high-quality crops with an ecological consciousness. Cee encourages other black farmers to start small, gather considerable resources, and borrow as little as possible to reduce the amount of debt when starting a farm.
