What began with an EZ Bake oven is now Rhonda L. Jones’s Chez Moi Bakery, a home-based specialty bakery with a food truck in Durham, NC. Rhonda started baking early, with her play oven and helping her mother. After buying rum on a Caribbean cruise, she tried baking a rum cake, and her business began.
Rhonda’s passion for business comes from her entrepreneurial father. For several years, Chez Moi was a hobby at the holidays. In 2013, Rhonda launched her food truck while still working full time. The truck offered rum cake ice cream cakewiches, lemon cake, and panna cotta, in addition to her original rum cake. After winning a spot in a national competition and being featured on a PBS special in 2015, she took a leap of faith and resigned from her job.
In addition to the food truck, Chez Moi ships desserts (as far as Afghanistan!) and supplies local shops. They were voted Dessert Food Truck of the Year (2018) on Mobile-Cuisine.com and won an award from Discover’s Eat It Forward Program (2020).
