Those of us who work at Weaver Street Market sometimes start to take the bulk bins for granted. We’ve been around them so long we don’t even notice them anymore! But if you’ve never bought anything in bulk, the bins can be intimidating. Here’s a quick guide to help you get started.
Bags and twist ties are provided at the bins, or you can bring your own to reduce waste. Avid bulk buyers re-use containers that they’ve weighed ahead of time. You can also bring a container and ask our cashiers to weigh it before you fill it. Then…
1. Find the item you want.
2. Scoop or dispense some into your bag or container.
3. Find the PLU for the item.
4. Use the wax pen to write the PLU onto the twist tie or the container.
5. Need help? Just ask our friendly staff!
Now when you check out, the cashier will know which item to charge you for.
Our bulk department offers all kinds of items at lower cost: flours, rices, beans, nuts, and more. We have fair trade sugar and chocolate chips, and treats like dark chocolate covered almonds and organic jellybeans. Some of our most popular coffee beans are available in bulk; you can grind them in our store right before buying them. And we have bulk spices and herbs, perfect for a recipe that uses a teaspoon of this and that. Save money, reduce waste, and buy fresh foods: learn more about the benefits of buying in bulk!
Watch Christy demonstrate how to use the bulk bins, below. (The sound is a little scratchy–it’s one of our fist videos!) And if you’ve never shopped in the bulk aisle, give it a try.
