Art:K12 is an exhibition program at Weaver Street Market’s Carrboro store, focusing on artwork created by local children and youth. The program began in February 2015. Its initial intention is to offer a public space for viewing visual art created by students in the CHCCS district, as well as local private schools. “Art Inspired by Science” will be on display from Sunday, March 15 through Sunday, April 26.
The inaugural exhibit in our new Art:K12 program is open! The artwork for the first show, “Art Inspired by Science – From Our Changing Planet to a Single Cell”, will be on display through Sunday, April 26. The work was selected by five science teachers at McDougal Middle School and offers creative ways to build and communicate scientific knowledge.
Some of the works you’ll see when you stop by were created by sixth graders studying geology. These include a set of “Volcano Baseball Cards,” a storyboard project called, “Journey on the Rock Cycle”, and two booklets, “The Adventures of Carla Calcite” and “Fermium-257”.
McDougal 7th graders contributed projects related to microbiology: “Cellular Superheroes,” in which each heroic character represents part of a cell and has a mission involving protecting the life of the cell, and “Unicellular Posters,” which won a contest at the school.
Intricate collage work created by the 8th graders demonstrates substantial knowledge of oceanography in an assignment entitled, “The Ocean Mural Project.”
Be sure to stop by the cafe in our Carrboro store to see the art.
