If you know a mother who loves flowers, we’ll have plenty of local blooms and fair trade roses in stores for Mothers’ Day.
Lily bouquets from Sarah & Michael’s Farm in Durham
Michael Turner works hard all year to ensure a steady supply of lilies. The farm staff plants thousands of bulbs each day; Michael orders bulbs over a year in advance for big holidays like Mothers’ Day! Bulbs grow in “coir,” ground coconut husk that is steamed clean after use and reused. The lilies are grown in greenhouses without pesticides and harvested before they bloom to enable them to arrive in stores undamaged.
Local flowers from Wild Hare Farm and Bluebird Meadows
Two local farms provide us with a changing variety of local blooms through the spring and summer: Wild Hare Farm (sold in Hillsborough and Southern Village) and Bluebird Meadows Farm (sold in Carrboro) anticipate having bachelor buttons, snapdragons, scented stock, and more.
Roses from Ecuador, via One World Flowers
One World Flowers imports roses from fair trade certified farms in Ecuador. In addition to paying a fair price, One World Flowers pays a 10% premium into a workers’ fund that is used to better the farmers’ community. The farmworkers vote on how to use the fund in the community. For example, at Inversiones Ponte Tresa, the fund provided a safe, on-site daycare facility for preschool aged children. Parents who work at the farm can drop off and pick up little ones on the way to and from work. At Hoja Verde Farm, the fund enables children to go to school.
Farms with fair trade certification are required to pay living wages, to treat workers properly, and to care for the environment and their workers by eliminating use of the most harmful agrochemicals. Female workers are protected from physical and sexual abuse, and leadership positions must equally represent women. A gift of fair trade roses “gives twice”—to your mother and to someone else’s!
We also have a wide selection of other bouquets, as well as various types of potted bulbs and plants.
