Blueberry season is starting! Blueberries from local farms are arriving in stores this week.
Each year, we watch the spring weather with trepidation, hoping abnormalities like an early warm spurt or late freeze won’t destroy annual crops like strawberries and blueberries. This year we were lucky and the early blueberry varieties are alive and well!
Our first shipments are coming from Southern Belle Organics in Whiteville, NC. First-generation farmers Brick and Jennifer Rooks began the farm from their love of blueberries, with a goal to produce fruit “as it was intended; organically.” The farm has 283 acres of organic blueberries and is developing an additional 400 acres.
We also expect blueberries this summer from Vollmer Farm, an organic, family farm located in Bunn, NC. We made a video when Russ Vollmer showed us his blueberry fields; watch it here: https://www.weaverstreetmarket.coop/vollmer-farm-blueberries-video/.
Update 5/30/18: With all this rain, Southern Belle is having a hard time getting into their fields, so we are going to have conventional berries from Lewis Nursery this weekend and early next week.
