Last April, we introduced local, organic yogurt from Carolina Farmhouse Dairy in Durham. The animal welfare approved herd of eight cows is on pasture most of the day. The Hamrock family started the creamery because they loved cows, and because yogurt was missing from the local food scene.
Kefir was also missing from the local food scene–until now.
Kefir is a fermented milk drink made by inoculating milk with a starter. It tastes like a thin yogurt. Like yogurt, kefir contains probiotics, as well as vitamins and minerals.
Carolina Farmhouse Dairy produces a line of kefir including blueberry, strawberry, lemon, plain, and golden milk (made with turmeric). We’ll be sampling them in stores this Sunday, August 14: from 11 to 2 in Carrboro and Hillsborough and from 3 to 6 in Southern Village. Stop by to try them! UPDATE: We’ve had to postpone the tastings because we can’t keep the product on the shelves! We’re glad you love the new kefir but are very sorry for the change in plans. We’ll reschedule soon.
