Local NC strawberries have arrived in our stores! This year, organic berries are coming to us from eastern North Carolina via Eastern Carolina Organics, mainly from two farms: Cottle Organics and Uncle Henry’s Organics in Rose Hill. We also have conventional berries from Lewis Farm.
Last year, our staff visited both organic farms on a field trip. We learned about both the challenges and the huge benefits (for workers AND consumers) of raising organic strawberries. Organic strawberries require a lot of labor, twice as much as conventional berries; rather than using chemical means to control insects, weeds, and diseases, many organic controls require hand labor like weed-eating between the rows of berries or hand-picking soft berries after a hard rain to control fungal growth. But we love providing you with healthy and delicious, pesticide-free strawberries!
