Last month, kids at Orange County Schools went on spring break. Food purchased through the Round Up program was available to cover the break for 432 kids.
For kids receiving assistance through a school meal program, school breaks can be hard. In Chapel Hill and Carrboro, TABLE works to provide food over breaks. In the northern part of Orange County, we deliver food directly to six schools. We drop off two pallets of groceries at each school, and the school arranges volunteers to sort the foods into bags for 72 kids.
This time, the bags included healthy fresh foods like apples, oranges, bananas, carrots, green beans, bell peppers, and sweet potatoes. One student commented “Those hippies at the co-op have the best apples.” The fresh food was supplemented with packaged goods like Field Day whole kernel corn, peanut butter, instant oatmeal, and Toasted O’s cereal. We heard reports that some of the kids had never seen peanut butter that needed stirring but loved it. With this delivery, we added Cabot butter and cheddar cheese, Homeland Creamery whole milk, and Latta eggs, packed into refrigerated bags with gel packs. As always, all the food was purchased at cost from our suppliers.
Thanks again for all you do in our community by rounding up!
