Art:K12 is an exhibition program at our Carrboro store’s cafe that focuses on artwork created by local children and youth. This month’s exhibit includes landscapes and portraits from Northside Elementary School and will be on display from Monday, May 1 through Sunday, June 4.
From the 1st graders: Blue Ridge Mountain Landscapes, color pencil and watercolor
First graders learned about the ways that artists create landscape drawings and paintings to capture a picture of a natural place. In their landscapes, students imagined traveling west to the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Using color pencil and paint, the first grade students used a horizon line to define the sky from the ground, and identified a foreground, middle ground and background to convey a sense of space. Although they were looking at the same “view,” each drawing shows unique style and details.
From the 3rd graders: Power Portraits, paint, printing ink, and pencils
3rd graders looked carefully and learned about the paintings of Kehinde Wiley, a New York–based portrait artist who paints people in powerful and elegant poses.
By observing the paintings, participating in discussions, and taking on powerful poses themselves, young artists at Northside identified what makes a person look powerful: a straight posture, direct eye contact, and a decorative background. The 3rd grade students created a power self-portrait and wrote one word that they feel is powerful.
These portraits combine painting, drawing, and printmaking processes.
